Chapter Sixty: Only One Chance
A golden-level Berserk Blade was less than a meter away from him, ready at any moment to grow suspicious of his identity. Especially if the man discovered the corpse at the bottom of the cliff... then all his previous careful arrangements would be instantly wasted. He would have taken that bullet for nothing, and in the end, the only road left to him would still be death.
Continuing to wait here was clearly an act of utter foolishness, for waiting would serve no purpose. He had overheard the conversation between the enemy and his companion just now, so unless he was mistaken, those golden evolvers should now be off in pursuit of Lin Chuyin and her followers. This one here had been left behind specifically to find the "culprit."
Until the killer was found, the man would not leave. And so long as he remained, Fang Mu would have no real chance of escaping alive. If, after searching the glacier fissures and finding nothing, the enemy were to glance over the cliff's edge... the "initiative" Fang Mu had fought so hard to seize would vanish in an instant.
Because, the moment he discovered the corpse, his suspicion would fall inevitably and immediately upon the only living person here...
If he truly wanted to survive, there was only one way—he had to kill the man!
His companion had already gone after Lin Chuyin and the others, while the silver-level henchmen were chasing down Lin Chuyin's subordinates. No one else would be coming here for a while.
So, in theory, if he could kill this man, Fang Mu might still have a chance to escape. But that was only in theory. The difficulty was almost insurmountable—like an ant plotting to bring down an elephant.
Isn't that laughable? To be honest, if he hadn't acquired the gene bullet, even if the enemy simply stood there motionless, Fang Mu would have had no way to harm him. Take the "Blaze" round he had fired at Lin Chuyin earlier—it had been like scratching an itch.
Even with the gene bullet, the challenge was undiminished. The reaction speed of a golden evolver was terrifying—so swift that, to his eyes, Fang Mu's every movement might as well be in slow motion. The instant the gun fired, the man could very well react and evade.
This was nothing like dealing with the last golden Berserk Blade he had shot. Then, distance was on his side, and the man had not the slightest reason to expect an attack—caught completely off guard, he had been killed with a single shot to the head.
But now... they were far too close. Close enough that every move Fang Mu made was under the man's direct scrutiny. Even the slightest suspicious gesture would mean certain death.
And there were far too many things that could raise suspicion—a glance, a word, a flicker of killing intent in the moment he struck, even the sound of his heartbeat could give him away. As soon as the man became suspicious, Fang Mu would have no chance left.
Doesn't this already sound like a nightmare-level challenge? In truth, this was only the beginning. All of these obstacles only guaranteed him a chance to fire a shot...
The greatest difficulty lay elsewhere—he had to kill his opponent in a single instant.
That was the real challenge! With the gene bullet as his only means of killing the enemy, it meant—he had to blow the man's head apart with a single shot!
Only the head would do—nowhere else, not even the heart. With a golden evolver's vitality, even a shattered heart would not kill him at once. If the man had even a second to react, Fang Mu's fate would be sealed.
Such was the gulf between them.
So...
"There is only one chance."
"I must destroy his head in the very first moment."
"Only then can I survive..."
Fang Mu repeated these words inwardly. Once everything became clear to him, his mind grew colder and more focused than ever before. The initial panic and confusion now slowly faded away...
Great events demand calm!
Fang Mu felt deeply grateful for his apparent talent for such composure. When driven into a corner, he seemed far more collected than usual.
Next...
He exhaled softly.
From here on, every action must be executed with flawless precision.
Otherwise, death would be his only reward...
...
...
"Where could he be hiding?"
Fang Mu's rapid-fire calculations had seemed long-winded, but in fact, they flashed through his mind in the blink of an eye.
Wei Lin had discovered him lying there unconscious but paid him no heed. Then the man looked up, scanning the glacier crevice with careful eyes.
He was certain his quarry could not escape, so he was in no hurry—patient and methodical. His gaze swept over every possible hiding place, searching with relentless thoroughness.
Unsurprisingly, he found nothing.
Hiding deep, he thought, as he unconsciously stepped further in.
At that moment, his ears twitched—he caught a faint, pained groan.
He started, frowning as he looked down.
At his feet, the surviving gunfighter let out a groan, opening his eyes with difficulty. The man’s gaze was hazy, confused...
He had awakened.
Wei Lin frowned, looking down from above.
It took several seconds for the man's eyes to focus, and then, as though realizing something, his expression turned to panic, helplessness, and despair.
But when, at last, his gaze locked onto Wei Lin, his whole body stiffened, and shock flashed in his eyes...
They stared at each other for a few seconds before the man's emotions seemed to surge—he opened his mouth as if to speak.
But his throat, scorched by the flames, could produce nothing but the harshest, hoarse "ah ah" sounds.
Wei Lin frowned and asked abruptly, "What do you want to tell me?"
The man nodded urgently, straining to speak, but the effort triggered a fit of coughing. He clutched his throat in pain, quickly coughing up a mouthful of blood, wanting to speak but only managing more guttural cries.
In the end, he managed to choke out a single syllable—"cul..."
Wei Lin's eyes sharpened, suddenly realizing, "Culprit? The killer? Are you saying you know where the killer is?"
The man's eyes lit up as he nodded, then, with immense effort, he began to turn himself over, as though trying to move.
The movement caused him terrible pain, and he collapsed several times.
Wei Lin frowned, hesitated for a moment, and then reached out to help him up...
