Chapter Seventy-Nine
After a while, Pan Yuxin fell asleep leaning against him.
When Zhou Yu awoke again, Nian Yu and Xiao Jie had already come in. Zhou Yu carried Pan Yuxin to the bed and told Nian Yu and Xiao Jie to rest early, then left.
Wang Hao saw Zhou Yu step outside and climbed down from the tree as well.
Zhou Yu asked, "Zhao Yan, who let him go?"
Wang Hao replied, "Your wife released him. The weather is pretty cold, after all, she must have felt a bit sorry for him."
Zhou Yu asked, "What time is it now?"
Wang Hao raised his wrist and glanced at his Panerai mechanical watch. "It's 1:51 in the morning. You and Xiao Long cost me half a night's sleep."
Zhou Yu laughed and said, "Alright, if you're not sleepy, keep me company for a chat."
With that, Zhou Yu climbed onto the roof of a police car. Wang Hao followed, asking, "What do you want to talk about?"
Zhou Yu said, "Let's talk about after I left. When I left, didn't I disband the group?"
Wang Hao said, "Yeah, you did disband us. But what did you expect us to do? Get regular jobs? Is that even possible? So, even though we broke up, we still gather together, take on some tasks now and then."
"Though we don't have as many assignments as before, and the rewards aren't as high, they're not too shabby either. At least better than working solo."
Zhou Yu asked, "Why can't you just get normal jobs? What's wrong with living like regular people?"
Wang Hao replied, "Would that kind of money be enough? Here, aside from Xin Xin, who makes a bit more with computers, who among us could manage? You only switched careers halfway, and it's only been a few years. We've been in that world for so long—some things aren't easy to change, and besides, we prefer this life. No worrying about whether we can afford this or that."
Zhou Yu said, "You're just too used to that lifestyle and don't want to live as ordinary people."
Wang Hao replied, "Forget it, let's drop that subject. Let me ask you something—how exactly did you manage to gather all of us together?"
Zhou Yu said, "Curious, aren't you? Everyone's story is different."
"Not everyone was tricked the way I tricked you."
Wang Hao shot him a look, disgruntled. "You have some nerve mentioning that! Playing Russian roulette with me, loading a dud round, and firing five times in a row."
Zhou Yu laughed heartily. "Hahaha, Xiao Long and Xiao Hu are tough guys, can't trick them, so I had to fight them head-on."
"But Xiao Long was pretty naïve, didn't know how skilled I am with knives. He was quite cocky back then, insisted on competing with me, but in the end, he didn't expect me to be better with knives than him."
"As for Xiao Hu, just went at it bare-handed. Damn, recruiting him was the hardest. He beat me black and blue."
"Actually, Xiao Leng was easy to recruit—just told him that if he joined me, he'd get to drive nice cars."
Wang Hao couldn't help but curl his lip. "No wonder, the first time I met Xiao Leng, he was cursing you for being a fraud."
Zhou Yu said, "What could I do? When we started out, having a van was already pretty good."
Wang Hao added, "A secondhand one at that. So, how did you know everyone's quirks, and how did you get in touch with Xin Xin?"
Zhou Yu said, "That was all thanks to Xin Xin. I met her through a task, though there was no conflict. Later, she became too mischievous, so I spanked her and gave her a few pieces of candy. That settled it."
Wang Hao stared at Zhou Yu in horror, silent.
He thought to himself, this—this is just ridiculously easy to fool.
