Chapter Forty-One
Xiao Jie glanced over at Nian Yu, who was struggling to keep her emotions in check at the moment.
By now, Xiao Jie had understood what Nian Yu meant.
She turned to Zhou Yu and said, “Haven’t you figured out what Nian Yu is trying to say?”
Zhou Yu replied, “I understand what she means. But a promise is a promise.”
Xiao Jie blushed slightly and asked, “So if you make a new promise now, does that mean the previous one is over?”
Zhou Yu looked at the blushing Xiao Jie in confusion and asked, “What do you mean?”
At that moment, Nian Yu interjected, “You blockhead, it’s the end of the world now. The things from before are history. Today, it’s as if we’ve been reborn.”
Zhou Yu’s eyes lit up and he turned to Nian Yu, asking, “So you’re saying I’ve fulfilled all the promises I made to you?”
This time, Nian Yu stayed silent, but Xiao Jie spoke up, “Idiot, before the apocalypse, weren’t you living your life peacefully?”
Zhou Yu said, “Alright, now I completely understand.”
He paused for a moment and continued, “But about the promise, let me talk about that later. There’s something more important right now.”
Nian Yu frowned, unsure of what Zhou Yu was planning, and said, “Hey, what are you up to now? Hurry up and make your promise to Xiao Jie.”
Xiao Jie’s face was bright red, and she quickly said, “No, no, promise Nian Yu.”
Although Xiao Jie declined verbally, in her heart, she wished Zhou Yu would promise her something as well. After all, she knew Zhou Yu rarely made promises, but whenever he did, he always kept them.
Nian Yu said, “No need to refuse—he still owes you a promise. He’s promised me enough already. This time, it’s your turn.”
She turned to Zhou Yu and added, “Come on, what are you waiting for?”
Zhou Yu said, “Let’s not rush. Listen to me first.”
As he finished speaking, Zhou Yu walked over, took Nian Yu’s hand, and said, “Actually, my love, there’s no need for you to apologize or thank me.”
“These are words I should be saying to you.”
“When I think back to how we first got together, it really does feel like a miracle.”
“Two stubborn mules with bad tempers managed to end up together. No one ever thought we would.”
“It seems like you were the one who took the initiative to pursue me, wasn’t it? Ha.”
When Zhou Yu saw the gentle warmth appear on Nian Yu’s face, he quickly said, “Alright, I’ll stop teasing. Let’s get to the point.”
“In the beginning, we were both so careful, so protective of this relationship.”
“I don’t know when it started, but somehow, we stopped tending to it with the same care.”
“Though, I suppose it’s not that we stopped caring.”
“As you said, I’ve given so much for this relationship. But in my eyes, you’ve given just as much.”
“You never told me how much pressure your family put on you for being with me. But I’ve always understood it deep down, even if I never said much about it.”
“My love, in the past, I was immature. I didn’t know how to comfort you. Sometimes, whether you wanted it or not, I always gave you what I thought was best.”
“I did many extreme things when we argued. Thank you for forgiving me.”
“Maybe my love was too domineering, suffocating you. Now, let me apologize. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
“And thank you, for staying by my side for so long. I have never regretted a single day with you.”
“It’s not perfect, but perhaps its very imperfection is what makes it perfect.”
“This time, may I be the one to declare my love to you, my dearest?”
