As Zhou Yu and his companions drove halfway, a sudden heavy snowfall began. Due to the weather, they had to slow down considerably. From the moment the weather changed, the zombies started to riot. Along the way, Zhou Yu and his group encountered continuous attacks from the undead, only reaching Qi City after night had fallen, shrouding the sky in deep black. They then drove slowly for almost another hour before arriving at the Qi City Military Subdistrict.

Looking out the window at the city where he had spent his childhood, Zhou Yu was filled with a flood of emotions.

Inside the Qi City Military Subdistrict, two armored vehicles were parked in front of the gate. Soldiers immediately raised their guns, aiming at Zhou Yu’s group. A man with the rank of lieutenant colonel shouted, “Who are you? What is your purpose here?”

Zhou Yu responded firmly toward the soldiers inside the gate, “We are from the Shura Base, here to see Chief of Staff Xiao.”

Then Wang Kui and Zhao Yan also stepped out of the car. Zhao Yan spoke to the lieutenant colonel, “Lieutenant Colonel Tan, our former commander contacted us. We’d like to meet him first.”

Lieutenant Colonel Tan, upon seeing Zhao Yan and Wang Kui, was momentarily stunned. Then he asked, “Yanzi, you’re still alive?”

Zhao Yan replied, “Yes, Lieutenant Colonel Tan. Please let us in first.”

Tan quickly ordered two soldiers to open the gate. After Zhou Yu and the others drove inside, the gate was closed again. Once inside the military district, they parked the car. Zhou Yu got out and, looking at the many soldiers around, showed a resolute face, though exhaustion was evident.

Curious, he asked Lieutenant Colonel Tan, “Lieutenant Colonel Tan, is the situation here not looking good?”

Tan glanced at Zhao Yan with a puzzled expression. Zhao Yan explained, “Well, how should I put it, he is now the head of the Shura Base.”

Tan was slightly surprised, then said, “Let’s go meet the commander first. He can explain everything to you.”

Zhou Yu nodded and followed Tan toward the dormitory area.

When they met Yan Qing, Zhou Yu’s brow furrowed. Yan Qing’s complexion was pale and yellowish—a clear sign of severe malnutrition.

Yan Qing looked confused when Lieutenant Colonel Tan entered. But when he saw Zhou Yu and the others behind Tan, his face showed great surprise.

Zhou Yu asked, “Old Yan, what’s going on here? What happened to you? And where are my parents?”

Yan Qing sighed deeply and said, “Food supplies are running low. On top of that, the sudden outbreak of the virus has infected many people. We’ve lost some soldiers rescuing others.”

“You saw it yourself—there are fewer than fifty soldiers in the entire military district.”

“Your parents are in the dormitory. It’s probably mealtime now.”

Zhou Yu said, “Take me there. We’ll talk more after.”

Yan Qing turned to Lieutenant Colonel Tan and said, “Xiao Yuan, take him to dormitory 406.”

Then he addressed Xiao Zhi, “Old Xiao, long time no see. Come have a seat.”

Zhou Yu had no mood to say much to Yan Qing now, so he followed Lieutenant Colonel Tan toward the dormitory building.

Zhao Yan and Wang Kui saluted Yan Qing and said, “Commander.”

Yan Qing nodded and said, “Glad to see you two troublemakers still alive. Come, have a seat.”

He then told the others, “Stop standing around, sit down quickly.”

Xiao Zhi said to Yan Qing, “Old Yan, how did you end up like this? Why don’t you come with us?”

Yan Qing shook his head and said, “I can’t leave. If I go, what will happen to these people? Just wait for death?”

Xiao Zhi asked, somewhat emotionally, “So you want to wait here to die?”
