Inside a private room at the Haicheng Nightclub, Gu Changqing raised an eyebrow as a line of young women entered and cursed, “What are these? All unattractive and forgettable? How do you expect to do business with this lot? Change them out!”

“I want pretty faces, great figures, long legs! Do you hear me? If this is all you’ve got, you might as well close down the nightclub!”

“Sir, you’re being too harsh—our girls come in all shapes and sizes, slender and voluptuous, sweet and alluring. If you don’t like them, we’ll keep changing until you’re satisfied…” The madam immediately recognized Gu Changqing as the one in charge, not someone easily fooled.

She hurried to appease him, smiling and waving for the girls to leave, quickly sending in a new batch.

“You go and pick personally. Bring me the best!” Gu Changqing ordered.

“Brother Quan, I actually thought that last group was pretty good,” Zhang Kun—one of the two security officers—whispered to Gu Changqing. Among them had been a petite beauty with an innocent face and striking features, her skin fair; he rather liked her.

“Wait for the later groups. They always keep the best ones for last,” Gu Changqing said, crossing his legs and popping a mushroom candy into his mouth.

“They always reserve a few top girls for demanding guests. If they send out all the best now, what will happen when important clients arrive later? They’d have to call the girls back, and that would offend people.”

It was only eight in the evening, the nightlife just beginning. Besides, Zeng Shiqian and his two companions didn’t seem to be wealthy VIPs.

Everyone here was sharp-eyed and shrewd.

“If you like someone, just say so. Don’t be shy with me. Tonight, everyone takes two girls home!” Gu Changqing declared.

The girls cycled through seven or eight batches, each with ten women, until finally eight were chosen to stay.

The madam wiped the sweat from her brow. The other three men were manageable, but the young man in the middle was the most difficult—fussy and bold, leaving her uncertain about his background.

A moment later, Gu Changqing was laughing heartily with two girls draped over him, and turned to the somewhat reserved Zeng Shiqian: “When you’re out to have fun, you should really let loose and enjoy yourself. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

“Back at the bureau, you lit up at the mention of coming to a nightclub, but now you’re just sitting there—are you actually up for it, or is it all talk?”

“Brother Quan, when it comes to talking, you’d better leave it to me!” the woman beside him teased.

“Damn!” Zeng Shiqian laughed, pushed back by their banter.

They drank for over an hour, everyone a bit tipsy, and planned to head out for a late-night meal before continuing their revelry at home.

Just as Gu Changqing was about to speak, a sudden crash rang out.

A figure smashed through the window and slammed into the wall.

Shards of glass flew everywhere, startling everyone.

Gu Changqing watched as the broken glass landed in his wine glass, his anger flaring.

Damn it! I’m just here drinking—who the hell did I offend?

He looked up to see a long-haired woman dressed in a black coat, a silver shield-shaped badge gleaming on her chest, disentangling herself from the curtains and climbing off the floor.

Her cold gaze swept over them, barely lingering, quickly assessing the surroundings before focusing on the window.

Gu Changqing instantly drew the gun from his waist, aiming it at her.

Without a word, he pulled the trigger!

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Gunshots rang out, but as he fired, the woman’s form shifted, blurring into a shadow, and she darted out through the window.

Just before she disappeared, her icy, ruthless gaze paused on Gu Changqing for a brief instant.

Then her face vanished, leaving only chaos in the private room.

“Damn it!” Gu Changqing cursed, jumping up and rushing to the window.

He saw the woman leap toward the building opposite, vanishing after a few swift movements.

“Quan, don’t act recklessly, she’s a Guard!” Zeng Shiqian finally recovered from the shock.

He was stunned that Gu Changqing had fired so quickly.

That was a Guard! Every one of them was a monster!

“So what if she’s a Guard? Does that give her the right to assault police? Can’t I have an instinctive reaction?” Gu Changqing raged.

He’d recognized the shield badge at a glance, guessing her identity.

He’d only just heard about the Guards that morning and mulled over them in the afternoon.

If he managed to kill her, it would mean she wasn’t very powerful—just a misunderstanding.

If not… then it was surely just a misunderstanding!

After all, he’d recently been attacked, so his response was understandably intense.

But all he saw was a shadow and the cold look she gave him before leaving.

Gu Changqing pondered; these Guards were indeed extraordinary, but he wondered just how strong they really were.

He was certain, though, that even after his own transformation, he couldn’t match her speed.

He’d have to find a way to test her abilities someday.

As he mused, the sky above the port suddenly lit up, and a bolt of lightning struck down.

Boom!

Then several more bolts followed, thunder roaring without pause.

Gu Changqing’s brow twitched.

That fierce?

If those bolts of lightning were manmade, then people in this world were truly remarkable.

On the surface, it seemed much like his previous life, but beneath it, the depths were unfathomable.

At this point, people outside the room, having heard the gunshots, burst in to find chaos and Gu Changqing standing at the window with his gun.

“Sir, what’s going on here—”

Zeng Shiqian stepped forward, flashing his credentials. “It’s nothing to do with you! Any damages will be compensated later.”

They glanced at the girls sitting on the sofa, confirmed everyone was safe, apologized, and left.

“You lot, come with me to the security bureau later. Everything that happened tonight stays between us!” Zeng Shiqian instructed the girls.

He’d handled incidents like this before.

“What time is it? What’s the point of going to the bureau now? Just send them over tomorrow morning!” Gu Changqing waved dismissively.

Zeng Shiqian thought for a moment and nodded, agreeing.

“Let’s go—time for a late-night snack!” Gu Changqing called.

As they left, Zeng Shiqian made sure to notify the nightclub staff and handle the aftermath.

During the meal, Zeng Shiqian called the captain, giving a brief report.

Gu Changqing had just fired several shots at a Guard; though no harm was done, if the Guard pressed the issue, things could get tricky.

...

The next morning, Gu Changqing woke between two girls, dazed for a while before climbing out of bed to wash up.

Soon after, he dressed and left.

The payment had been settled the night before; the girls would report to the bureau themselves.

He still had other matters to attend to.

After breakfast, he went home for a quick check, then took a wooden box and drove out to the suburbs to rent a warehouse, occupying 30,000 square feet—over 3,000 square meters.

The entire warehouse was constructed with steel frames and corrugated metal, empty except for some support columns.

The rent was thirty thousand a month.

After all, this was the largest seaport in Southern Chu; warehouses like this were plentiful.

He’d already asked Zeng Shiqian and the others about it last night.

There was even a livestock market nearby covering over a hundred acres.

After renting the warehouse, Gu Changqing headed straight to the livestock trading market.
