Chapter Five: The Assassin Lurks
After finishing their meal, Chu Feng and his companions left the Sea Sky Club. Ever since they stepped out of the restaurant, Xu Ruohan’s expression had been grim, making Zhou Ming feel unspeakably awkward—he had truly lost face tonight.
“Doctor Xu, it’s still early. There are a few good movies playing recently. How about we catch one together and then I’ll take you home?” Zhou Ming hurriedly suggested, hoping to make up for his earlier embarrassment.
Xu Ruohan replied without a trace of emotion, “I’m tired and need to rest. No need to see me off—I can get home on my own.”
At that moment, Zhou Ming cursed Chu Feng countless times in his heart. If not for this guy causing trouble, tonight would have been a romantic candlelit dinner. Not only had his appearance disrupted everything, but Zhou Ming had also made a fool of himself.
Undeterred, Zhou Ming pressed on, “If you’re not up for a movie, maybe we could stroll through the night market? What do you think?”
This time, Xu Ruohan ignored him entirely.
She walked up to Chu Feng and said, “Thank you for tonight’s treat. I don’t like owing favors. If you need anything at the hospital in the future, as long as it’s within my power, I’ll help you.”
Chu Feng lit a cigarette, smiling. “Help? Just don’t make trouble for me at the hospital, and that’ll be enough.”
His words made Xu Ruohan flush with anger. She hailed a cab and left without another word.
After the two had gone, Chu Feng glanced at Li Yuewu.
“It’s hard to get a taxi at this hour. You’d better head off,” Chu Feng remarked offhandedly.
Li Yuewu was clearly annoyed—was this guy actually trying to get rid of her? Usually, men would be eager to spend more time with her.
She planted her hands on her hips, thrust out her chest, and said, “What’s your problem? You want me gone that badly?”
“And another thing, Chu Feng: you still haven’t answered me. Are you gay? Why don’t you like women?” Li Yuewu continued, “If you don’t answer, I’m just going to keep following you!”
Chu Feng shrugged indifferently. “I need to use the bathroom. If you want, you can follow me.”
With that, Chu Feng set off in search of a public restroom, and sure enough, Li Yuewu stubbornly trailed after him.
This young lady’s temper was as unyielding as an ox.
“There was a restroom in the club earlier, wasn’t there? Why do you have to go looking for one out here?” Li Yuewu grumbled.
Chu Feng turned back, an inscrutable smile on his lips.
A sense of foreboding rose in Li Yuewu’s heart. Even though they’d left the club, plenty of shops nearby had restrooms. Yet Chu Feng led her through twists and turns, heading into an increasingly deserted alley.
That smile of his just now… Could it be that this guy…
As she was thinking this, Chu Feng suddenly lunged, pinning her to the ground!
“You pervert! So your true colors are finally showing! What do you want from me?” she cried out.
Bang!
Before she could finish, a gunshot rang out from not far away—a bullet whistled past, barely missing them!
If not for Chu Feng’s quick reflexes, Li Yuewu would likely have taken a bullet.
Stunned, she realized Chu Feng hadn’t been trying to take advantage of her at all—he’d just saved her life.
Chu Feng scooped her up and carried her into a corner of the alley, his voice low and commanding: “Stay here and don’t move!”
Terrified, Li Yuewu nodded blankly.
Chu Feng glanced at his watch. The dial began to spin rapidly.
Activate potential! Twenty times!
In the next instant, time seemed to accelerate on the watch, and Chu Feng’s movements became blindingly fast.
In a flash, Chu Feng darted out from the alleyway, fully exposing himself to the shooter’s line of fire.
As expected, gunshots rang out the moment Chu Feng appeared, but he dodged every bullet with lightning speed, and in doing so, pinpointed the shooters’ positions.
Without warning, several scalpels appeared in Chu Feng’s hands as if by magic.
Four cold gleams sliced through the night, streaking toward the four gunmen hidden in the darkness.
Each scalpel found its mark in a chest; with a chorus of screams, the gunmen collapsed in pools of blood.
Even as they died, their eyes were wide with terror as they gazed at Chu Feng—as if seeing the Grim Reaper himself.
Chu Feng shook his head with a cold laugh, muttering, “Those bastards made me burn another year of my life. Guess those two bowls of soup were wasted…”
“It’s over. The bad guys are taken care of. You can come out now,” Chu Feng called to Li Yuewu, who was still cowering in her hiding spot. This time, he didn’t mock her—after all, any woman would be terrified in a hail of bullets.
Just then, sirens blared in the distance, followed by the flash of blinding headlights. Several police cars screeched to a halt at the mouth of the alley, and about a dozen officers poured out, instantly surrounding the two of them.
Li Yuewu was dumbstruck.
She hadn’t even recovered from the shock of the gunfight before being surrounded by the police.
“Hands up! Get down with your hands on your head!”
“Drop your weapons! We received a report of a homicide. Please cooperate with the investigation!”
“I was only defending myself,” Chu Feng said coolly, glancing at the officers.
Li Yuewu quickly chimed in, “That’s right! We’re the victims here. If not for Doctor Chu, we’d be dead right now. He was just defending us!”
The lead officer, clearly the captain, approached, baton in hand. “We received a tip-off about a serial killer in the area and sent four undercover officers as bait. The men you just fought were all police officers!”
As soon as Officer Wang Feng finished speaking, Li Yuewu was speechless.
Those gunmen were undercover cops?
Chu Feng’s face was impassive, but inside he was deeply shocked. Things were more complicated than he thought. Whoever was behind this was clearly intent on his death.
How interesting.
A challenge like this was a rarity in his otherwise dull life, and Chu Feng felt a thrill of excitement.
Li Yuewu, on the other hand, was outraged by Wang Feng’s attitude. Chu Feng had acted to protect her, and now he was being misunderstood. She had to speak up for him.
She stepped forward. “He acted to protect me. If you want to take him away, you’ll have to get past me first!”
“Miss, you’ll need to come with us as well. You’re involved, and we need your cooperation for the investigation. Understood?” Wang Feng replied.
Li Yuewu snorted, clenching her teeth. “Do you know who my father is? He’s Director Li! Try taking me if you dare!”
But Wang Feng remained expressionless. “Miss, whoever your father may be, the fact remains: this gentleman killed four police officers, and you’re suspected of being his accomplice. Please cooperate.”
Li Yuewu was lost for words. Even after revealing her father’s identity, this lowly officer was unmoved. What was going on?
Chu Feng watched coldly from the side. Li Yuewu had already played her trump card, yet this Officer Wang Feng wasn’t the least bit intimidated. This could only mean that those targeting him were fully prepared and had enough power to rival the Li family.
Fuming, Li Yuewu called her father, recounting everything that had just happened and sending her location.
Her father promised to send someone immediately.
After hanging up, she regained her composure and pointed at the officers. “My father will be here soon. You’d better be ready.”
But Wang Feng and his men remained unfazed.
About ten minutes later, several Red Flag sedans arrived at the scene. As soon as Director Li stepped out, Li Yuewu hurried to his side.
“Dad! These officers are bullying us. It was self-defense, but they want to arrest us. You have to stand up for us!” she pleaded.
Director Li surveyed the scene with a frown, patting her shoulder. “I’ll get to the bottom of this. Don’t make a scene.”
He turned to Wang Feng. “Young man, I haven’t seen you before in Shanghai. Are you from the provincial department?”
For an officer to insist on taking his daughter away under such circumstances, Director Li knew this was no ordinary policeman.
As expected, Wang Feng stepped forward and said gravely, “Director Li, I’m Wang Feng, sent from the provincial department to investigate a case in Shanghai. Doctor Chu killed four of our officers—this is an established fact, so we must bring Miss Li in for questioning. I hope you’ll uphold the law.”
Director Li’s face darkened instantly.
He hadn’t expected four deaths. The attack had clearly been aimed at his daughter; Doctor Chu had simply been caught up in the storm.
Though he began to speculate about who might be behind this, there was no answer for now.
“Dad! They tried to kill us and fired first. You have to clear Doctor Chu’s name. He only acted to save me,” Li Yuewu insisted.
Director Li fell silent, his brows knit.
If those killed hadn’t been officers, or if Wang Feng wasn’t from the provincial department, perhaps he could have sorted things out. But now, faced with these two insurmountable obstacles, even if Wang Feng insisted on taking Li Yuewu in, there was nothing he could do. The other side was obviously prepared.
He had to tread carefully now—the other side was waiting for him to slip up.
Chu Feng could see Director Li’s dilemma, and Li Yuewu’s efforts to defend him. Saving her had not been in vain.
“Director Li, according to protocol, we must take both suspects in. If you have any objections, you can call the provincial department directly,” Wang Feng said impatiently, stepping forward.
Director Li clenched his fists, well aware that Wang Feng was forcing his hand. If he allowed his daughter to be taken, he’d be mocked as an incompetent father. But if he stopped Wang Feng, it would be obstruction of justice and abuse of power—serious charges. Either way, he was caught in a trap.
Caught between a tiger and a cliff, Director Li’s mind was in turmoil.
Watching this, Chu Feng shook his head, a hint of amusement in his voice. “Hey, Officer Wang, what makes you so sure I’m the one who killed them?”
