Chapter Forty-Three: There Is a Traitor
After Chu Feng knocked out the wounded wolf, the soldiers came forward and tied up all the members of Sakura Path. While binding them, they also checked their mouths for hidden poison capsules.
"Chu Feng, are you hurt?" Old Jin walked over and examined Chu Feng from head to toe, looking for any injuries.
"I'm fine. You're a grown man, touching me like this—people might think we're up to something. Stop it, we're not even married yet; don't ruin my reputation." Chu Feng quickly brushed Old Jin's hands away, feeling uncomfortable with a man groping him.
If it had been Han Xuefang touching him, he wouldn't have minded at all; he might even pretend to be hurt or ticklish.
The soldiers in the corridor burst into laughter at Chu Feng's words, thoroughly impressed by him.
"Don't take these people away just yet. I need to check if they're connected to the group that attacked me earlier today," Chu Feng said, ostensibly to verify their identities, but in truth, he wanted to use his wristwatch to collect their lifespans.
"There are two more assassins in the room, both dead. Get their bodies out first. There's a young nurse inside—don't give her any trouble." Chu Feng instructed the soldiers at the door to fetch the bodies of the two assassins from the room.
Chu Feng made a show of inspecting the assassins' identities. Whenever he saw a plum blossom tattoo on an assassin's arm, he knew without a doubt they belonged to Sakura Path.
It took nearly ten minutes for Chu Feng to finish collecting lifespans—a total of eight people, including one whose vital part Chu Feng had destroyed with a surgical knife. Their lifespans were all gathered.
Altogether, the eight assassins had a combined lifespan of 160 years left, only 20 years each. As killers, they would inevitably face retribution.
"You seem to be living quite well. Not only are you used as bait, but you even hid a beautiful nurse in your room. What, are you planning some uniform fantasy?" Old Jin teased, a hint of jealousy in his tone, as two soldiers carried the unconscious Han Xuefang out.
"I have no idea why she came to the ward. If it wasn't for me, she would've fallen victim to those killers." Chu Feng still couldn't figure out why Han Xuefang had wandered into the ward in the middle of the night.
"You really could bring yourself to hit her? You knocked the poor girl out?" Old Jin looked at the unconscious Han Xuefang, assuming Chu Feng had done it.
"You've misunderstood. She saw those two dead bodies and fainted from fright. I'd never strike a beautiful woman," Chu Feng explained briefly, causing Old Jin to grow suspicious—perhaps Han Xuefang was also part of Sakura Path.
"Let's go see the old man first. Leave these people to the others." Old Jin handed the surviving Sakura Path members over to the military, then went with Chu Feng to another ward where the old man was staying.
Chu Feng and Old Jin took the elevator down to the first floor, then headed to another ward in a different building.
As they approached the entrance, Chu Feng felt a sense of danger—a warning that always came to him in times of peril.
"Watch out!" Chu Feng suddenly grabbed Old Jin and pulled him back several steps. Where they had just been standing, two crater-like bullet holes appeared on the floor—large ones.
Apparently, someone had used anti-sniper equipment; a regular sniper rifle wouldn't have made such big craters. Even more astonishing was the lack of any gunfire—this weapon must have been fitted with a silencer, and there were two of them.
Gun control in China was among the strictest in the world, so the mastermind must have spared no expense to procure two silenced sniper rifles.
"Contact the special operations team in Old Chen's ward and see if they can locate the snipers," Chu Feng instructed Old Jin to reach out to the special team stationed in the new ward.
Without finding these two snipers, the military couldn't safely escort the three captured Sakura Path assassins away—the snipers could be in the office building across the street, with the entire Air Force Hospital within their range.
Old Jin immediately called the special operations team, directing them to search for the snipers, and also notified the military to interrogate the captured assassins upstairs.
"Wang Chen, you and Xiao Hei are responsible for tracking down where the two snipers are hiding. The rest will stay here and protect Old Chen," Ma Han ordered after receiving the call.
Wang Chen served as a spotter in the special operations team, partnered with Xiao Hei, the sniper. Though Wang Chen had only recently joined the team, his talent was evident, and Ma Han appreciated him.
The two snipers had indeed been hiding in the office building opposite the hospital, but after firing those two shots and missing their target, they had already retreated, knowing their position would soon be searched.
"Report: the little nurse just woke up but keeps crying. She won't listen to anything we say," a soldier came to inform Chu Feng that Han Xuefang had regained consciousness but was traumatized, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Let's go. No need to visit Old Chen right now, our team leader is guarding him," Chu Feng told Old Jin, then headed upstairs. Old Jin thought for a moment and followed him.
When Han Xuefang woke, she found herself on the sofa in Old Chen's ward, with two armed soldiers standing nearby. Memories of the two men dying in front of her overwhelmed her with fear, and she cried, ignoring all attempts at comfort.
"Don't cry, it's over now. None of this is your fault," Chu Feng said, walking over and pulling her into his arms.
The two soldiers and Old Jin quietly slipped out, closing the door behind them.
"I'm scared. Why would anyone want to kill you? And those soldiers were carrying guns," Han Xuefang said after calming down, though fear still lingered in her heart.
