Chapter Three: The Divine Healer
Upon hearing Chu Feng’s response, the young police officer’s face broke into a wide, delighted grin.
“Doctor Chu, I really can’t thank you enough! The Ma family lineage depends entirely on you now,” he said cheerfully, laying on the flattery.
The other officers looked utterly bewildered, exchanging confused glances.
So their captain had some… issues in that department? Why send his wife to see Doctor Chu? Was he asking the doctor to, well, take his place?
The image was just too much—a few of them couldn’t help but let their imaginations run wild.
The young officer quickly clarified for his subordinates, “What on earth are you all imagining? My wife’s just not feeling well, and I’ve asked Doctor Chu to take a look at her, that’s all.”
“Captain Ma, we haven’t said a word! Sounds like you’re the one digging yourself into a hole here.”
After the officers had calmed the situation, they left together.
By then, Chu Feng was already stretching lazily as he returned to his office. Li Yuewu, still fuming, followed right after him.
Her heart was full of frustration. She’d intended to wring an apology from Chu Feng for his outrageous comments, wrap up the matter, and spare her grandfather any further worry.
She hadn’t expected Chu Feng’s attitude to be so nonchalant, nor that he would so easily handle the ruffians who might have given him trouble.
In this hospital, it seemed, there was nothing that could truly stump Chu Feng. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became!
Leaning back in his office chair, Chu Feng looked at the relentless Li Yuewu and said, “Miss Li, it’s my break time now. Since you’re so insistent on staying, are you hoping to nap with me? Having a beauty like you for company would make for an interesting afternoon, though I worry I might end up more tired than rested.”
“Shameless!” Li Yuewu clenched her teeth so hard they ached, her little fists balled in fury. “Will you apologize or not? This is the last time I’m asking!”
Her young lady’s temper was in full swing, not something most people could handle.
Chu Feng shrugged. “I haven’t done anything wrong—why should I apologize? Your joke, Miss Li, is no laughing matter.”
“I’ve never been teased by anyone in my whole life! Let’s see if I don’t give you a pig’s head for your trouble!”
With that, Li Yuewu raised her little fists and charged at Chu Feng.
Chu Feng slipped off his shoe and flicked it lightly, letting it land just under her feet.
Off-balance, Li Yuewu toppled forward, landing squarely in Chu Feng’s arms.
In an instant, he found himself holding her delicate, soft form against his chest.
Thud!
Just then, the office door was flung open.
“About earlier—Chu Feng, you’d better have a reasonable explanation for me!”
A sharp female voice rang out, and a tall, elegant figure swept into the room.
Xu Ruohan had recently returned from studying at Stanford Medical School and now worked as a surgeon at Jimin Hospital. She was the goddess of the hospital, admired by all.
Li Yuewu was instantly mortified; after all, she was sprawled on top of Chu Feng when another female doctor barged in—there could hardly be a more embarrassing scene.
Xu Ruohan’s brows knit at the sight. Her skin was flawless, and her long legs drew the eye, impossible to conceal even under her white coat. Her figure was nothing short of exquisite.
Faced with this tableau, Xu Ruohan was visibly disgusted. “Doctor Chu Feng, what you do with women in your spare time is none of the hospital’s concern, but you are on duty now. Please be mindful of your conduct.”
Chu Feng merely shrugged, making no effort to explain.
Li Yuewu had hoped Chu Feng would speak up for her, but to her dismay, he simply acted as if he agreed with the accusation.
Unable to swallow her indignation, Li Yuewu rushed to clarify, “You’re mistaken! I just tripped, that’s all. How can you judge the situation by appearances alone? As a doctor, you should know better than anyone to be objective.”
“I only believe what I see,” Xu Ruohan replied coolly. “And whatever improprieties you two get up to are none of my concern.”
Improprieties? Improprieties?!
Li Yuewu felt deeply insulted and retorted, “How dare you slander me! Apologize—right now! Or I’ll report you and have you thrown out of this hospital!”
“As you wish,” Xu Ruohan replied indifferently.
“You think I won’t?” Li Yuewu fumed.
Chu Feng watched the bickering women with a smile tugging at his lips.
“Doctor Xu, there’s no point wasting time on this little yellow-haired brat.”
“Chu Feng! Who are you calling a yellow-haired brat? You’re all ganging up on me!” Li Yuewu, beset on all sides, was nearly in tears.
Chu Feng had no intention of stooping to her spoiled-little-miss tantrums.
Instead, he turned to Xu Ruohan. “Doctor Xu, what did you mean just now? What exactly do I need to explain to you?”
At the mention, Xu Ruohan’s cheeks flushed with anger.
“So you stole my patient—fine. But why did the operation fail? Don’t you owe me an explanation?”
She was referring to the underworld boss whom Chu Feng had let die earlier.
Chu Feng replied with composure, “That patient was not someone you should have interfered with.”
“You mean I couldn’t handle it? It was just a few stab wounds with severe blood loss—stitch up the injuries and he’d live! You’re not fit to be a doctor. You’re a butcher—a devil!” Xu Ruohan’s voice shook with emotion.
With a calm motion, Chu Feng tossed a stack of documents onto the desk before her, tipping his chin for her to take a look.
Xu Ruohan and Li Yuewu had only glanced over a few pages before their faces paled.
The files detailed the patient’s lifetime of crimes: murder, robbery, child trafficking—each offense more horrifying than the last.
“A beast like that dying on the operating table is far too easy a death!” Li Yuewu exclaimed, her fists clenched.
“Even if he was beyond redemption, you can’t just let him die,” Xu Ruohan muttered. “But someone like that really deserves to be hacked to pieces!”
Chu Feng couldn’t help but chuckle softly. For all her icy demeanor, Xu Ruohan did have a surprisingly endearing side—unlike those who hide behind a facade and never reveal their true thoughts.
At that moment, Li Yuewu’s impression of Chu Feng changed dramatically. She’d only ever heard that he’d let many die on the operating table, but it seemed those who died at his hands were all truly irredeemable villains.
Just then, a man entered the office—it was Zhou Ming, Jimin Hospital’s leading surgeon.
When he saw Chu Feng, he shot him a look of utter disdain before turning to Xu Ruohan with a bright smile.
“Ruohan, I’ve been looking for you everywhere. I reserved a table at the Michelin three-star restaurant tonight—would you do me the honor of joining me for dinner?”
Xu Ruohan arched her elegant brow and, glancing meaningfully at Chu Feng, replied with a light laugh, “Doctor Zhou, I’m afraid I’ve already agreed to dine with Chu Feng tonight. My apologies.”
Chu Feng shrugged—so this woman, who just moments ago was interrogating him, was now using him as a shield?
