Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Police Arrive

A burly man lying on the ground witnessed this scene and gasped, a chill running down his spine. For Chu Feng to so effortlessly smash a pit into a concrete floor—if that had landed on a person, the man dared not imagine the outcome.

The security guards stationed at the hospital entrance saw Chu Feng single-handedly knock down more than a dozen men, their eyes filled with disbelief. To serve as security at the Air Force Hospital, most were skilled in martial arts or retired soldiers. For one person to so easily lay out more than a dozen, he must be at least a special forces soldier. The guards had no intention of concerning themselves with these small-time thugs nursing broken limbs.

After returning to the emergency room, Chu Feng told the doctors inside to move the eight dead men to the morgue and have their families come to claim them. These eight had committed countless heinous acts in life; their injuries—leading to their hospitalization—had come from a turf war with a rival gang, during which they’d been slashed and subsequently sent to the hospital.

Before leaving, Chu Feng instructed the doctors that if anyone came to make trouble, they should place all responsibility on him. What he did, he would answer for—no one else would be left to shoulder the blame.

The doctors transferred the eight bodies to the mortuary on Taiping Street and then wrote up a report, which they submitted to Deputy Director Sun.

“Are you sure Chu Feng did all this alone? None of you intervened?” Deputy Director Sun, reading the report, let a flicker of barely perceptible malice cross his face.

Previously, Chu Feng had humiliated him in front of the director and the city party secretary, even forcing him to kneel and kowtow, calling him ‘Father.’ If not for the sake of preserving his own position, Sun would have torn Chu Feng to pieces.

“It was him alone. He first saw the two gravely injured, then visited six with lighter wounds. After he finished, all eight were inexplicably dead. Before leaving, he told us to blame him if anyone came to make trouble.”

The doctor detailed the events for Deputy Director Sun, repeating Chu Feng’s parting words.

“All right. Keep this to yourself and don’t discuss it. Under no circumstances should this spread outside, or it will seriously affect the hospital.” Sun waved the doctor away. After the doctor left, Sun stared at the report, a plan already forming in his mind.

“Police department? A doctor at our hospital has just killed eight patients. Please send someone immediately.”

With such irrefutable evidence, let’s see who can save you now—you’ll obediently go to prison, Sun thought, already picturing Chu Feng being led away in handcuffs.

Chu Feng approached Elder Chen’s ward and saw Old Jin and Old Wang standing outside, their faces unusually grave.

“Old Jin, what’s going on with you two? Why so serious?” Chu Feng had never seen them look so stern and was curious.

“Chu Feng, a high-ranking official has come to visit Elder Chen. They’re discussing matters inside. We’re here to stand guard,” Old Jin whispered.

“So it must be someone important indeed, or they wouldn’t have you two posted at the door,” Chu Feng teased, his tone light.

As Chu Feng, Old Wang, and Old Jin chatted outside the ward, several police officers arrived at the entrance of the Air Force Hospital, led by a strikingly beautiful female officer.

“Officers, you’re finally here. The doctor who killed eight people is on the second floor—I’ll take you up,” Deputy Director Sun, having made the call, had been waiting at the door for the police to arrive.

The police said nothing, merely following him into the elevator. On the second floor, Li Yanran noticed two soldiers standing guard at the elevator, both armed.

“Deputy Director Sun, why are you bringing the police here? We haven’t needed officers up to now,” said one of the soldiers on duty, both of whom recognized Sun but couldn’t fathom why he’d brought police with him.

If the police were there to relieve them, they’d have received prior notification.

“It’s like this—a murder suspect just arrived on the second floor. The officers are here to make an arrest, and I’m showing them the way,” Sun explained, not naming the suspect. In his mind, surely the soldiers wouldn’t hinder police business.

“Sorry, our orders are that no unauthorized personnel are allowed past this point except doctors,” one of the soldiers blocked Li Yanran’s way.

“We’re with the police department. We’ve been told a doctor here just caused the deaths of eight patients downstairs. We’d like to take him in for questioning. If there are any confidential matters, we’ve all signed non-disclosure agreements; nothing will be leaked,” Li Yanran replied. Though frustrated at being stopped, she had no intention of forcing her way through. It would be unwise to clash with the military while trying to apprehend a suspect.

“I need to request authorization. Please wait here and don’t move.” One of the soldiers went to find his captain; this was not a decision he could make alone.

“Tell me, is there some special patient on this floor? Why are there military guards?” Li Yanran pulled Deputy Director Sun aside and asked quietly.

“There is a special patient, but I can’t say who—it’s confidential,” Sun replied, cursing himself for forgetting that Elder Chen was on the second floor when he called the police.

“You should have mentioned that sooner. Good thing I’m the one here today—if there were a conflict, no one could bear the consequences.” Li Yanran looked at the deputy director, resisting the urge to smack him.

Soon, the soldier returned with his company commander, Zhang Dayong. Having heard his subordinate’s report, Zhang was surprised; the entire second floor was under lockdown—no unauthorized person could slip by unnoticed.

“Who’s your commanding officer? Have them come speak with me,” Zhang Dayong demanded upon reaching the elevator.

“I’m their captain—Li Yanran. Are you the officer in charge of security here?” Li Yanran responded promptly.

“I’m Company Commander Zhang Dayong, responsible for security here. I heard you’re here to apprehend a suspect. Do you know the suspect’s name?”
