Chapter 149 Rendezvous
After observing for a long time and making sure there were no abnormalities around him, Chu Feng slowly stood up.
Chu Feng glanced at his compass and simultaneously calculated the distance between himself and the Special Operations Group. They were currently nearly a hundred kilometers apart, and Chu Feng needed to reach them within two hours, as he had already spent half an hour traveling through the jungle.
Chu Feng pressed forward along his predetermined route. It was June, and the Golden Triangle was intensely hot; the moment Chu Feng entered the jungle, his entire body was drenched in sweat.
There were insects here that Chu Feng had never seen before. A single bite from some of these bugs could mean death in this place.
Before coming, Chu Feng had smeared pungent wind-oil balm all over his body; the sharp odor kept certain insects from coming anywhere near him.
"Team Leader, this is the latest intelligence report. Captain Ma and the others are facing problems far more severe than we anticipated." In Long Feihoo's office, someone placed the latest report on his desk.
Long Feihoo picked it up and frowned deeply. After a moment, he picked up the landline phone beside him and made a call.
"You can set off now. The Ministry of State Security matters will be handled by me. You must be extremely cautious on this trip."
Long Feihoo had arranged a backup plan, and the intelligence report he had just read forced him to play this trump card.
"Team Leader, does one person really have such immense capability? What if he fails the mission?"
The person standing before Long Feihoo seemed to know who he had just called.
"If we place all our bets on Chu Feng alone right now, the burden on his shoulders will simply be too heavy. This person understands the Golden Triangle and Scorching Sun; I just hope he can accomplish the mission."
Long Feihoo had no choice. The intelligence report delivered to him concerned the situation in the Golden Triangle, where the drug lord Khun Tai had dispatched more men to tighten the encirclement around Team Leader Ma Han and his subordinates. Even if Chu Feng rendezvoused with Ma Han, nobody knew whether they could withstand the immense pressure!
Chu Feng kept strictly to the route etched in his memory as he headed toward the assembly point. In one hour, he had covered forty kilometers.
Despite the vitality enhancement gifted by his wristwatch, Chu Feng was still extremely exhausted. This exhaustion was not physical, but spiritual—no matter how formidable your body was, if your mind could not keep up, it was entirely useless.
Bang! As he hurried along, Chu Feng heard the faint sound of gunfire. Unlike the single shots from earlier, this gunfire was extremely dense, and Chu Feng could even distinguish the distinct crack of sniper rifles.
After carefully identifying the direction of the sounds, Chu Feng broke into a sprint directly toward the gunfire. The only people capable of engaging in such intense firefights here were the special operations team, the drug lords, and the mercenaries of Scorching Sun.
"Colonel, virtually all of our men have been dispatched, yet we still haven't managed to capture those Chinese special forces soldiers. On the contrary, those people have killed quite a few of our men."
Inside Jack's wooden cabin, a subordinate was reporting the battle situation at the front lines to Jack. Jack had never expected the combat effectiveness of the Chinese special forces to be so formidable. The combined forces of Scorching Sun and Khun Tai had gone out to capture these few special forces soldiers and failed to catch them, suffering heavy casualties instead.
"Tell Miao Lang I no longer want them taken alive. Dead or alive, just eliminate them as long as they are taken care of."
Jack realized that trying to capture the Chinese special forces alive was an impossible dream. Continuing to fight this way would only result in even heavier casualties, so he abandoned the idea of taking prisoners.
As it turned out, the Scorching Sun mercenaries and Khun Tai's armed forces had been relentlessly pursuing Ma Han and his men solely to capture them alive; otherwise, Khun Tai would have long ago deployed a massive force to completely surround them.
After running for over ten minutes, the gunfire grew closer and closer to Chu Feng. He found a favorable vantage point to conceal himself and took out his binoculars to survey the scene.
The sight before him made the heart hanging in his throat finally settle back down: he spotted Xiao Hei, the sniper hiding in the shadows.
Opposite Xiao Hei, at least a hundred men had gathered, wearing a variety of uniforms, with several of them being of African descent.
Chu Feng adjusted his breathing, found a well-concealed spot, and placed a grass-woven camouflage hat over his head.
Then, he pulled a silencer from his pocket and screwed it onto his sniper rifle. This silencer was something he had borrowed from the members of the 822nd Regiment before crossing the national border.
Bang! Chu Feng fired his first shot. A muffled gunshot rang out, and instantly, a bullet claimed a life. Because Chu Feng's rifle was fitted with a silencer, those men were temporarily unable to locate his sniper position.
Meanwhile, Xiao Hei, positioned opposite Chu Feng, heard the muffled gunshot and quickly pivoted his muzzle toward Chu Feng's location. When he spotted Chu Feng through his rifle scope, a wave of elation washed over him.
"Captain, Chu Feng has arrived! He is at my nine o'clock position. This guy brought a sniper rifle equipped with a silencer."
Xiao Hei immediately relayed the news of Chu Feng's arrival to Ma Han and the others. During their escape, Cheetah had also been wounded, and after a brief consultation, the remaining members had decided to fight these people to the bitter end.
Xiao Hei had never expected that their intense gunfire would draw Chu Feng in, and Chu Feng had been patiently waiting for the right opportunity to open fire.
"Captain, do you copy? I am at your nine o'clock position." While continuing to fire, Chu Feng used his tactical headset to contact Ma Han and the others. He had not turned his headset on while entering the jungle earlier.
"We copy, Chu Feng! Find a way to get over here immediately; the captain is barely holding on, and another team member is wounded as well."
Wang Chen's voice came through Chu Feng's headset. Chu Feng fired another shot and then put his rifle away. He needed to calculate the distance and make a single, decisive dash across, ensuring he gave the Scorching Sun forces no opening.
"Wang Chen, you and the other team member provide covering fire. In thirty seconds, I will make one desperate dash across. Let's synchronize our timing."
Having calculated the distance, Chu Feng instructed Wang Chen and the other member to deliver suppressing fire to pin down the enemy on the opposite side first.
Thirty seconds later, Chu Feng sprang forward like an arrow released from a bow, sprinting rapidly toward Ma Han's position in a zigzag pattern. As he ran, both the Scorching Sun mercenaries and the armed militants spotted him and immediately opened fire.
Swish! Swish! Several bullets brushed right past Chu Feng's clothing, startling him with how close they came and prompting him to accelerate even further.
After thirteen seconds of sprinting, Chu Feng finally arrived at Ma Han's temporary position. Upon reaching them, Chu Feng immediately handed his sniper rifle to Wang Chen and tossed his assault rifle to another team member.
"Chu Feng, I'm done for. You must lead them out—promise me." Seeing that Chu Feng had arrived, Ma Han grabbed his hand, urging him to bring Wang Chen and the others safely away.
