Chapter 111: The Gravity of the Situation
Chu Feng took the file and pulled out the contents. One look was enough to make him feel an immense weight pressing down on him.
"How could they have such accurate intelligence? Only Elder Chen, Director Liu, and I knew about this. Could Director Liu have leaked it? That doesn't seem right, either."
The document revealed that the organization known as Blazing Sun was already aware that Chu Feng was scheduled to perform surgery on Elder Chen in two days. They were planning to take the lives of both the Elder and Chu Feng within that timeframe.
"This was obtained by a mole from the Ministry of State Security, and it was just transmitted today," Old Wang said, his face turning grave.
"What do we do now? If we proceed with the surgery, we'll likely provoke a direct assault from them," Old Wang admitted, unable to come up with a viable plan.
"Old Wang, tell the State Security agents to keep a constant watch for when the Blazing Sun operatives cross the border. We can strike first; once they enter the country, we can either arrest them all or eliminate them. That way, no one will be left to cause trouble."
Chu Feng couldn't think of a better solution either. The people from Blazing Sun were elusive; unless they chose to reveal themselves, they were nearly impossible to find—especially with someone in the capital paving the way for them.
"Elder Chen, I will go talk to Director Liu. If you allow it, I hope to move you to the military district. I refuse to believe those people could infiltrate a military facility."
Chu Feng was backed into a corner. Without taking such measures, they would have to be on constant guard against the assassins. However, the medical facilities at the military district were inferior, lacking the necessary equipment. Furthermore, the distance posed a risk that Elder Chen’s body might not withstand the strain of the journey.
"I don't think there's a need to move. I, an old man, will just wait here for them to come and take my life. I want to see what these people are really capable of. Are they tougher than the artillery fire I faced from the Americans back in the day?"
Elder Chen’s attitude had hardened. Having been targeted by assassination attempts one after another, and now having his surgery put at risk, even a common man would feel a spark of anger—let alone a veteran who had seen the horrors of the battlefield.
"I will go speak with Director Liu. If moving isn't an option, we can switch wards or have the equipment brought here. Performing the surgery on-site might be safer."
Chu Feng still needed to consult Liu Shuiqing. After all, the Air Force Hospital housed other patients; he couldn't jeopardize others' lives just for the sake of Elder Chen. Although the Elder held a high rank and possessed special privileges, those privileges could not be built upon the lives of others.
Chu Feng found Liu Shuiqing and explained the situation, omitting the mention of Blazing Sun as it was classified information.
"We can set up the operating theater in a high-end ward. Those rooms are larger, so we can install the equipment and instruments securely without taking up too much space."
Liu Shuiqing decided to relocate the surgical suite to a more spacious ward and secretly transport the necessary equipment inside.
"Then please, Director Liu, implement this as soon as possible. We have a day and a half until the surgery." After discussing the details further, Chu Feng left.
Returning to the room, Chu Feng found Lieutenant General Gao present; someone had clearly informed him of the situation.
"Chu Feng, what did Director Liu say? Can they clear out an operating room?" the Lieutenant General asked.
"Director Liu suggested we use a luxury ward, move the equipment there, and proceed. But it depends on whether Elder Chen is willing."
Chu Feng relayed the plan to the Elder and the Lieutenant General. If the Elder agreed, preparations could begin.
"For safety's sake, I still think we should move him to the military district, but have Director Liu prepare the surgical suite here to create a diversion," the Lieutenant General suggested, leaning toward the security of the military base.
"I can guarantee Elder Chen's safety to the greatest extent, but what about the instruments? Do we move them from the hospital?" Chu Feng could use the vitality within his watch to ensure the Elder’s life was not in danger, but the surgery required specialized equipment that had to come from the hospital.
"We stay in the hospital. I want to see what kind of waves these people can really make." Elder Chen slammed his hand against the table as he spoke.
Seeing the outburst, the Lieutenant General flinched. He had once been a student of the Elder and knew his fiery temper all too well.
"How about this: we wait for news from State Security. If they sneak into the country without us knowing, we move the Elder to the military district. If we catch them the moment they cross the border, we proceed with the surgery here," Chu Feng proposed—a reasonable suggestion, though not without risk. Even with State Security's intelligence network, there were always loopholes.
"Elder Chen, you told me before to listen to my doctor. I am your doctor now, and you must listen to me." Chu Feng left no room for argument.
"Chu Feng, you should ask the female assassin you captured yesterday. Find out how they usually enter the country," the Lieutenant General suggested.
Chu Feng realized he had overlooked Ziyan. He left the room and went straight to where Ziyan and Han Xuefang were whispering to each other. They had hit it off immediately, with Ziyan recounting her life as an assassin abroad while Han Xuefang shared embarrassing stories from her school days. The room was filled with their laughter.
Chu Feng stood in the hallway, puzzled by how easily Han Xuefang could bond with such a cold-blooded killer.
"Ziyan, I need to ask you something. How do you people from Blazing Sun enter China? Is there a fixed route, or do you have people who help you smuggle yourselves in?"
