Chapter Ten: Arrival
Inside a villa in the capital, a young man sat on the sofa, gently swirling a glass of red wine. Beside him knelt another man. The villa was shrouded in darkness, with the lights off and the windows covered in black cloth, making it impossible to discern the young man’s features.
“Sir, this man is truly formidable. Both Tiger and Little Wu were taken out by him with hidden weapons. I managed to escape only by resorting to a trick,” said the kneeling man, who happened to be the burly fellow that had narrowly escaped at the airport. After his escape, he came directly here to report to the man on the sofa.
“Then how did you return alive? You should know what our rules are,” the man on the sofa spoke, his tone calm, yet the burly man shivered all over upon hearing him.
“Kuilang, I’ll give you one day. If by this time tomorrow you haven’t completed the task, you’ll have to end your own life. This is your last chance. Make the most of it,” the man on the sofa said, then rose and headed upstairs. Kuilang did not dare to stand until the man had disappeared upstairs, his back drenched in cold sweat.
Chu Feng and Old Wang, meanwhile, were escorted away by the airport’s armed police, simply because neither of them had thought to flee.
Old Wang intended to use the armed police vehicle to reach the veteran’s hospital room, so that Chu Feng could treat the old soldier.
They were brought to the armed police duty office at the airport, where Old Wang immediately presented his identification.
Captain Wang Liang carefully verified Old Wang’s credentials, even placing a call to his superior for confirmation.
“My apologies, it’s just procedure. I hope you both understand,” Wang Liang said, his attitude much more respectful once he learned Old Wang’s true identity.
“It’s alright. No blame for those who don’t know,” Old Wang replied, restoring his calm demeanor. The events earlier had only startled him; they hadn’t provoked his anger.
“Captain Wang, I hope you can assign a team of armed police to escort us to the Air Force Hospital. We’re in urgent need,” Old Wang politely requested both a vehicle and personnel.
“Of course. I’ll make a call and have everything ready for you,” Wang Liang replied, pulling out his phone.
“It’s all arranged. I’ll accompany you to the airport exit—the vehicle is already waiting,” Wang Liang said after hanging up. He then escorted Chu Feng and Old Wang to the airport exit.
At the exit, an armed police vehicle awaited them, with four fully armed officers aboard. These four were tasked with ensuring Chu Feng and Old Wang’s safety.
After thanking Wang Liang, Chu Feng and Old Wang boarded the vehicle and set off for the Air Force Hospital where the veteran was staying.
“Don’t make the call. I suspect your phone is either being monitored or you have a traitor on your side,” Chu Feng quickly stopped Old Wang as he prepared to dial.
“I need to call ahead, just to inform them. I’m worried they won’t let you in—after all, that veteran’s status is quite special,” Old Wang explained, wanting the hospital prepared due to the veteran’s unique identity, lest Chu Feng face trouble upon arrival.
“Let’s wait until we get there. You mustn’t call now. If we’re ambushed along the way, I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to save you next time,” Chu Feng insisted, certain there was a leak in Old Wang’s circle.
Old Wang glanced at Chu Feng, opened his mouth as if to speak, then put his phone away in silence.
He knew Chu Feng was right. If a traitor exposed their plans, they could be attacked again, endangering not only themselves but also the lives of the armed police accompanying them.
“Chu Feng, when we arrive at the hospital, whatever happens, don’t say a word. I’ll handle everything,” Old Wang suddenly said, leaving Chu Feng puzzled. Still, Chu Feng didn’t dwell on it—his purpose was to treat the patient.
Chu Feng checked the location of the Air Force Hospital on his phone and saw they were still at least fifty kilometers away. He then turned off his phone and slept in the car.
Traffic jams in the capital were notorious. It took over two hours to cover the fifty kilometers, as the police driver didn’t run any red lights. If they had, they could have arrived in an hour.
Upon reaching the Air Force Hospital, Old Wang thanked the armed police escort and led Chu Feng to the veteran’s ward.
The veteran resided in a special ward, reserved for those who had made exceptional contributions to the nation—a testament to his significance.
Ascending to the second floor, Chu Feng noticed guards everywhere. In addition to regular soldiers, there were agents and plainclothes officers watching from various positions.
“Hello, access ahead is restricted. No entry permitted,” a soldier suddenly stopped Old Wang and Chu Feng.
Old Wang said nothing, merely handed over his credentials and asked the soldiers to call their commander.
After inspecting Old Wang’s credentials, the soldier asked them to wait while another went inside to fetch their company commander.
Soon, a man in civilian clothes approached. Chu Feng could tell from his gait that he had served many years in the military.
“Hello, I’m Captain Zhang Dayong, in charge of security here. Before you go in, we need to conduct a search on you and this young man,” Zhang Dayong said, then ordered his soldiers to search both Old Wang and Chu Feng, checking their belongings thoroughly, even bringing in police dogs to sniff for anything suspicious.
“Follow me,” Zhang Dayong said after confirming there were no issues, leading Chu Feng and Old Wang inside.
The deeper they went, the more surprised Chu Feng became. He hadn’t expected such heavy security on this floor, with so many plainclothes officers and agents.
“Old Wang, you’re finally back. Elder Chen’s condition has worsened again,” someone called out as they followed Zhang Dayong.
“It’s gotten worse?” Old Wang’s brows furrowed when he heard Old Jin’s words. He quickly remembered Chu Feng at his side and made the introduction: “Right, Old Jin, this is the miracle doctor I invited from Shanghai, Chu Feng.”
