Chapter 62: The Genius Professor
Gu Xiangnan tossed out those words and then hung up the phone. The department chair was dumbfounded. If this task wasn’t completed, wouldn’t the leadership skin him alive? He tried calling again, but each time, the other party hung up immediately. Helpless, the chair had no choice but to turn to the vice principal for assistance.
The vice principal had originally wanted to push this hot potato onto the department chair, but with the matter botched, both of them would be affected. After much deliberation, the vice principal decided to accompany the chair to Gu Xiangnan’s home in person.
Night had already fallen deeply.
Gu Xiangnan returned to the villa by taxi. He had drunk a bit too much, his steps unsteady. As soon as he reached the villa gate, he saw two figures waiting there.
“Who’s there?” Gu Xiangnan instantly sobered up and asked alertly. Beside him, Taoyao transformed into a fox, entering a state of vigilance, ready to protect her master at any moment.
“It’s me, the department chair.” The chair abandoned his usual arrogance, greeting him with a fawning smile.
Gu Xiangnan’s irritation was evident. “Didn’t I say already? I’m not going back.”
Seeing Gu Xiangnan about to enter, the chair panicked and hurriedly blocked his way.
The vice principal was accustomed to being held in high esteem. Parents, concerned for their children’s futures, always treated him with deference. How could he tolerate Gu Xiangnan’s attitude?
“Gu, I’m the vice principal. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll obediently return to school tomorrow.” The vice principal gestured at the luxurious villa. “Did you buy this place? Or was it that so-called ‘sister’ of yours? Seems the rumors are true—you’re just living off a wealthy woman. If you refuse to come back, I’ll spread the word. Your ‘sister’ might not withstand the public pressure and leave you. Then who will support you?”
“How dare you!” Gu Xiangnan thundered.
A cold, lethal glint flashed in his eyes. They could target him, but if anyone threatened the women who cared for him, he would see them dead without hesitation.
“Xiangnan!” At that moment, Su Hanyan opened the door and called him inside. She had seen the confrontation on the indoor monitors and hurried out to defuse the situation.
Su Hanyan’s presence quelled some of Gu Xiangnan’s murderous intent. He turned to the vice principal and said, “If my senior hadn’t come, the two of you wouldn’t be leaving alive tonight.”
“You want me to return? Fine. I’ll give you a chance. Resign, and I’ll go back.”
The vice principal exploded with rage. “You insolent brat! Daydreaming! I would never resign.”
“Don’t say I didn’t give you a chance.”
With that, he and Su Hanyan supported each other as they returned indoors.
The department chair was frantic. How had things only gotten worse? He had thought that bringing the vice principal, a higher authority, would yield a better result. Instead, the vice principal’s airs only made things worse. They both left humiliated.
The next day, at the University of Traditional Medicine.
Principal Hua Hongwen had returned. The vice principal led a group of teachers and students to greet him at the gate. As a sedan slowly came to a stop, Hua Hongwen stepped out with steady strides.
The vice principal hurried forward. “Principal, you’re finally back.”
Hua Hongwen asked, “Did you go invite Gu Xiangnan yesterday?”
The department chair rushed up, his face full of distress. “Principal, we went, but Gu Xiangnan absolutely refused to come back—he even cursed us out.”
“Yes, Principal, and he insulted you as well—terribly so,” the vice principal added, embellishing to smear Gu Xiangnan’s name.
Hua Hongwen’s expression darkened as he immediately took out his phone. “What’s going on? He shouldn’t have insulted me.”
Principal Hua was about to call Gu Xiangnan. Everyone immediately quieted down, straining to listen.
The call connected.
“Hello, Miracle Doctor Hua.”
“Mr. Gu, would you come to school today? Didn’t we agree on this before?” Hua Hongwen’s tone softened, courteous.
On the other end, Gu Xiangnan laughed. “Since Miracle Doctor Hua is personally inviting me, I’ll be there shortly.”
“No rush. I’ll wait for you in the school auditorium,” Hua Hongwen replied with a smile, ending the call.
Mr. Gu?
The principal actually addressed Gu Xiangnan as “Mr. Gu”! That was a term of respect! As the foremost of the Four Great Miracle Doctors of Jiangning, Hua Hongwen showed such deference to a young man just over twenty.
Some faces changed color.
The vice principal dabbed sweat from his brow and suggested, “Principal, why don’t we head to the auditorium? Isn’t there an all-school assembly today?”
The group made their way toward the campus interior.
As they walked, the vice principal asked, “Principal, you mentioned inviting a genius professor—when will he arrive?”
Hua Hongwen stopped, his gaze complex as he looked at the vice principal. “He’ll be here soon. I’ll introduce him to everyone shortly.”
The teachers and students were abuzz with excitement and speculation:
“This is wonderful—we’ll finally meet the legendary professor!”
“I wonder how old he is. He must be an experienced elder.”
“I’ll have to get to his class early to reserve a seat.”
Soon, the group arrived at the auditorium. Each class was already seated in neat rows, waiting for the assembly to begin. Cao Guang and Zi Xiaoyin’s class was seated right in the front, closest to the podium.
On the platform stood a long table, with a row of school leaders seated behind it. The center seat remained empty—reserved for Principal Hua Hongwen.
In front of the podium, advanced live-streaming equipment had been set up. The school had decided to broadcast the assembly online.
The live feed was projected onto a large side screen, though few people were watching or leaving comments online. But this didn’t dampen the electric atmosphere in the auditorium.
When Principal Hua Hongwen took the stage, thunderous applause erupted from the entire audience.
The students were all fans of Miracle Doctor Hua. They aspired to heal the sick and save lives. To enter this renowned university of traditional medicine, they had studied tirelessly. Now, they finally had the chance to see their idol in person.
With the principal present, everyone thought the assembly would begin. But after taking his seat, Hua Hongwen kept checking his phone, as if waiting for someone important.
This did not go unnoticed, and whispers rippled through the crowd:
“Is the principal waiting for someone?”
“It really seems like it.”
“Could it be some high-ranking official is coming?”
Before long, a smile broke across Hua Hongwen’s face. He looked around the hall, cleared his throat, and began to speak.
“Teachers, students, today we are gathered here for an important announcement.”
The auditorium fell silent; everyone waited for what would come next.
“We are deeply honored to welcome an outstanding scholar, who will be joining our faculty as a professor.”
“This professor has mastered traditional medical techniques long thought lost. His arrival will inject new vitality into our university and ensure that the precious heritage of traditional medicine is passed on.”
“I once had the privilege of participating in the rescue of a critically ill patient. When I was at a loss, this genius professor employed these lost techniques to cure the patient completely.”
His words sent waves of shock through the audience. For a leading expert in traditional medicine to admit his own limits—such humility was truly admirable.
The students below the stage grew even more restless. If even the principal was surpassed, just how skilled was this professor?
Their anticipation mounted.
Just then, the auditorium doors swung open, a shaft of light streaming in from outside.
And in that radiant entrance stood a tall, commanding figure.
