Chapter 11: The Miracle Doctor from Afar
"Goryeo?" Yang Dianfeng had almost forgotten about this matter.
"Yes, President Wang brought him."
"Let them in," Yang Dianfeng nodded.
Soon, a subordinate led Wang Jinquan inside, followed by a man in his forties. The man wore traditional Goryeo attire and carried a medicine chest reminiscent of those used by Chinese doctors.
Having offended Yang Dianfeng last night and lost money, Wang Jinquan was unwilling to accept defeat. As the underground emperor of Jiangning, this colossal figure was not one he wished to lose.
"Brother Feng, this is the renowned healer from Goryeo, Mr. Park Self-Important," Wang Jinquan introduced.
Wang Jinquan expected that, given his years of acquaintance with Yang Dianfeng, the latter would show him some courtesy and not throw him out on the spot.
Sure enough, Yang Dianfeng merely glanced at him and then politely shook hands with the famous doctor.
"Mr. Park, please sit, and have some tea."
"Boss Yang, it's a pleasure to treat your wife," Park Self-Important bowed and then took his seat.
"This Dr. Park is the top Korean healer in Goryeo. Patients seeking his care must book two years in advance. Even their president regularly consults him for medicinal cuisine and health maintenance."
Wang Jinquan’s words made Park Self-Important somewhat proud. He stroked his sparse goatee, sipped his tea, and held his head high.
Yang Dianfeng frowned slightly at this display.
"For your wife’s swift recovery, I spared no expense and pulled strings to invite him. He just landed today, and I brought him straight here," Wang Jinquan continued, displaying his loyalty to Yang Dianfeng.
When Bai Huabing had adamantly refused surgery, Yang Dianfeng had been troubled. So, when Wang Jinquan suggested inviting a renowned foreign healer, he hadn't objected.
Who could have known that fate would bring Brother Gu?
After meeting Gu Xiangnan, Bai Huabing’s illness had improved by more than half.
Yet the famous healer from Goryeo had already arrived; it wouldn’t do to send him away without hospitality.
Yang Dianfeng decided to entertain him properly, offer some compensation, and send him on his way.
"Dr. Park, I must apologize. We have already found a doctor for my wife—this gentleman, Gu Xiangnan. She is already much improved," Yang Dianfeng explained.
Park Self-Important looked at Wang Jinquan with displeasure.
Wang Jinquan, surprised, pressed, "Brother Feng, you only met Gu Xiangnan yesterday—how could she be so much better in one day? That’s not scientific!"
"She truly has recovered. I witnessed it myself," Yang Dianfeng replied, then briefly recounted to Gu Xiangnan the story of inviting the foreign healer.
"Since both of you are renowned doctors, why not get acquainted, become friends, and exchange medical knowledge? That way, Mr. Park’s trip won’t be in vain," Yang Dianfeng suggested.
"Oh? She’s cured? And in just one day? Your country couldn’t possibly have such medical skills—even I couldn’t achieve that! Boss Yang, let me examine her again. Be careful not to be deceived," Park Self-Important said, his Chinese fluent thanks to years of study at the Imperial Capital’s Traditional Medicine University.
He had learned his medical skills in China. Upon returning to Goryeo, his effective treatments and minimal side effects earned him nationwide recognition and acclaim.
Gradually, he became known as a miracle healer. Deep down, Park Self-Important looked down on the Chinese; he thought they were too foolish, failing to properly study their own traditional medicine.
Without waiting for Yang Dianfeng’s permission, Park Self-Important stood up and walked toward Bai Huabing.
From the moment he entered, the beautiful Bai Huabing had caught his eye.
His eyes were small and narrow, so even when he stared at beauties for a long time, no one noticed.
Now he had created an opportunity for himself, intending to take full advantage, to linger in his examination.
This wasn’t his first time; whenever a beautiful woman came for consultation, he would invent extra examinations, making them undress.
Park Self-Important approached Bai Huabing, pretending to check her pulse. As his fingers touched her wrist, he lightly scratched her skin.
So smooth!
He felt a tingling excitement, though his face betrayed nothing.
"Madam, your pulse is seriously abnormal. Let me examine further!" he said, reaching out to touch her.
The moment he lightly scratched her skin, Bai Huabing felt a sense of unease. Seeing him lunge toward her, she retreated a few steps in fright.
A nearby subordinate rushed forward, shoved Park Self-Important away, then drew a gun and aimed it at him.
"Damn it, do you think you can touch our sister-in-law?"
Park Self-Important raised his hands, but refused to admit defeat.
"Boss Yang, I’m here to treat your wife. Is this how you treat your benefactor? Without examination, how can I know if you’ve been deceived?"
"As everyone knows, your Chinese traditional medicine originated from our Korean medicine. Technically, Chinese medicine can never surpass Korean medicine. I simply don’t trust your Chinese doctors," he declared.
"You’re full of nonsense, you damn stick!" Gu Xiangnan was furious.
It was one thing to belittle him, but not his medical skills.
"You dare insult me?" Park Self-Important’s face turned red.
"What did I call you?"
"You called me a stick."
"Fine, I won’t call you a stick—I’ll call you a club. You’re nothing but a club!"
Gu Xiangnan had grown up in the mountains, though he never attended school.
But his twelve mentors were all remarkable, each with their own strengths. They had imparted all their knowledge to him.
From learning to write as a child, to mathematics, English, history, geography, physics, chemistry...
With his mentors’ one-on-one teaching, Gu Xiangnan mastered school subjects even better than ordinary students.
He loved history, and remembered clearly that Goryeo’s history was short—it had once been a vassal state of China.
After descending the mountain, he browsed his phone and saw many things about Goryeo.
Goryeo had stolen much of Chinese culture, as netizens had listed:
The Dragon Boat Festival, Spring Festival, Confucius, tug-of-war, ink painting, couplets, Chinese knots, movable-type printing... They stole half, modified half, and then proudly announced to the world that they had invented these.
China’s national treasure, the giant panda, loaned to Goryeo for exhibition, was claimed by their people as their own.
The Chinese written language—characters—was secretly appropriated for heritage application, with Goryeo claiming the characters were their invention.
Even Hanfu, dumplings, wontons, snail noodles, candied hawthorn, fried sauce noodles... so many things became theirs.
The worst part was, after stealing, they would bite back, insisting China had stolen their culture.
Whenever he saw such news, Gu Xiangnan clenched his fists in anger.
Now, Park Self-Important practiced Korean medicine, which itself originated from Chinese medicine, yet he claimed Chinese medicine originated from Korean medicine.
It was like a son denying his father.
Who could tolerate that?
If not for Yang Dianfeng’s hospitality, Gu Xiangnan would have slapped him already.
"You dare disrespect me! I’ll make you regret it!" Park Self-Important began screaming, charging at Gu Xiangnan like a madman.
Gu Xiangnan didn’t hold back, grabbed a nearby club, and struck him down.
"Using a club on a club—how fitting!"
He sneered at the fallen Park Self-Important.
"What angers me most is your attempt to rebrand Chinese medicine as Korean medicine for heritage recognition. Claiming that Shennong and Li Shizhen were Goryeo people, that acupuncture and the Compendium of Materia Medica belong to you. Have some shame! Your barren land—could it really produce so many medicinal herbs?"
"Take old white flower, cardamom, smilax, clove—these only grow in tropical regions. Your country is temperate. Which of these herbs grow in Goryeo?"
"You’re nothing but thieves!"
Park Self-Important gasped for breath, coughed a few times, still trying to argue.
"We didn’t steal! You simply abandoned it. Your young people don’t believe in Chinese medicine, but we in Goryeo value it. Why not let us carry it forward? If we become the international standard-setters for acupuncture needles, the world will only remember acupuncture as our invention."
Hearing this, Gu Xiangnan grew even angrier.
He raised his hand, ready to strike, when Park Self-Important suddenly cried out.
"Wait! We Goryeo people aren’t to be trifled with! I’ll defeat you with our Taekwondo!"
Park Self-Important slowly got up and took a stance.
"Fine, if that’s how you want it, let’s have a match. I’ll pit my kung fu against your Taekwondo."
Park Self-Important knew escape was difficult.
Judging by the blow he had just received, he certainly couldn’t win.
He could only resort to tricks.
As soon as Gu Xiangnan finished speaking, Park Self-Important suddenly lunged to the side—right where Bai Huabing was standing!
