Chapter 66: Don't Overthink It
Qin Miao believed that if she mentioned Gu Yancheng, Shen Yan would surely help her because of his relationship with Ye Yaoyao.
Yet, when Shen Yan heard her words, he merely raised his eyebrows and asked in confusion, “Gu Yancheng is targeting you? Why would he target you?”
Qin Miao’s heart sank sharply; something felt amiss.
Why was Shen Yan’s attitude toward her so cold? Was it because he knew she was the one who poisoned him? That couldn’t be—if Shen Yan knew, his first reaction would have been to break ties with her. So it had to be something else.
Qin Miao soothed herself, telling herself not to panic.
“Maybe… maybe it’s because of Yaoyao. Everyone can see the relationship between Gu Yancheng and her.”
She had already said so much; Qin Miao couldn’t believe Shen Yan would remain unmoved!
Indeed, after hearing her, Shen Yan’s eyes flickered.
Just as Qin Miao was about to rejoice, Shen Yan’s next words extinguished her hopes once more.
“Is that really the reason?” Shen Yan narrowed his eyes, his whole demeanor radiating indifference. “Who is Ruan Ruoshui, the person Yaoyao mentioned? What’s your connection to her?”
At his words, Qin Miao nearly collapsed, but she forced herself to stay upright.
No, she had to hold on!
“Ayan, do you not trust me anymore?” Qin Miao pouted, looking aggrieved. “Has Yaoyao said something to you, is that why you’re acting like this…”
She had said so much, and yet Qin Miao was still dodging the question.
Seeing he would get nowhere, Shen Yan didn’t bother to press further.
“Go home,” he ordered her.
“Ayan, about those resources…”
“Qin Miao, after what you’ve done, do you really think you deserve my help?” Shen Yan replied gently.
Still stubborn, Qin Miao insisted, “I… I haven’t done anything, what did I do?”
Shen Yan ignored her, heading upstairs with clear purpose, and directly pushed open Ye Yaoyao’s bedroom door.
Ye Yaoyao was unfazed, mocking with a smile, “You’re willing to leave Qin Miao alone downstairs?”
“She’s gone.”
“And you’re willing to let her go?”
Shen Yan frowned, disliking her attitude.
He was entangled with other women, yet she still seemed so spirited about it.
“I’m sleeping here tonight.”
“Then I’ll go to the master bedroom,” Ye Yaoyao replied without hesitation.
“You sleep here. You’re a guest; isn’t it normal to sleep in the guest room?” Shen Yan retorted, raising an eyebrow.
Was this woman deliberately trying to provoke him?
“Then you’re the host, you should sleep in the master bedroom,” Ye Yaoyao countered.
Shen Yan’s gaze darkened; he looked at her with a complicated expression, then turned and left.
Seeing this, Ye Yaoyao happily went to the bathroom to shower.
Tonight, she would lock her door when she slept.
However, while she was showering, Shen Yan returned, dressed in clean clothes and lying on the bed with a book in hand.
“You really plan to sleep here tonight?”
“When have I ever lied to you?”
“Then I’ll go to the master bedroom…”
Ye Yaoyao was about to head out when Shen Yan called after her.
“These past few nights, my stomach always acts up strangely. You know some medicine, don’t you? Take a look at me.” Shen Yan spoke earnestly, making things up.
“Why didn’t you say so earlier?” Ye Yaoyao strode over. “Let me see.”
She reached for Shen Yan’s wrist, but he refused.
There was nothing to observe unless an episode occurred.
Shen Yan put aside his book and lay down. “You’ll see tonight.”
“Then I’ll sleep on the sofa.”
Ye Yaoyao really couldn’t accept sharing a bed with Shen Yan.
“It’ll be very painful then, and I won’t be able to utter a sound,” Shen Yan continued his nonsense. “It worsened because I ate that plate of chili peppers. Don’t you feel responsible?”
Fine, Ye Yaoyao understood now—people with an excessive sense of morality were doomed to be emotionally blackmailed!
With a dark expression, Ye Yaoyao lay down beside Shen Yan.
She closed her eyes, and soon the lights went out.
After two or three months, the two shared a bed again, but now everything was different.
Ye Yaoyao’s body was tense; she felt she would have trouble falling asleep tonight.
Yet before long, she drifted off.
Shen Yan turned his head, watching the moonlight streaming through the glass onto her face, illuminating her sleeping features distinctly.
So obedient in sleep, so prickly when awake.
But he liked her vividness.
She had been too docile before, always accommodating—Shen Yan disliked people without character.
He watched for a long time before realizing how long he’d been staring at her.
Since he was already watching, why not…
His hands moved faster than his mind, and he pulled Ye Yaoyao into his arms.
She struggled a little, then found a comfortable position in Shen Yan’s embrace and fell asleep.
A smile unconsciously crept onto Shen Yan’s lips; something deep within him was filled.
When Ye Yaoyao woke, Shen Yan was already up.
She washed briefly, then suddenly remembered something and headed to the master bedroom.
Moving quietly, Ye Yaoyao searched the room and finally found her ring in the bedside drawer.
Her coming-of-age ring!
Shen Yan, the thief.
She slipped the ring onto her finger, and the next moment Shen Yan’s voice sounded, “What are you doing?”
Caught, Ye Yaoyao didn’t bother to hide her action.
“Obviously, I’m reclaiming what belongs to me.”
She waved her hand. “I’m here to take my ring.”
Shen Yan moved in to snatch it, but Ye Yaoyao dodged, holding her hand behind her.
Shen Yan chased after her, and Ye Yaoyao dodged again.
In the next moment, Ye Yaoyao was pinned beneath Shen Yan on the bed.
The two were close, in a position that was hard to describe.
Ye Yaoyao took a deep breath, gritting her teeth as she spat out his name, “Shen Yan!”
Shen Yan was amused by her embarrassment and anger. “What’s wrong? Shy? Right now we’re just pressed together—what we did before was much more intimate.”
As he spoke, he leaned close to her ear, his breath tickling her neck.
“It’s been months, shall we revisit those memories?”
Why did this woman always carry a faint milky scent?
They used the same shower gel, yet he didn’t smell like that.
“Shen Yan, are you insane?”
Ye Yaoyao pushed him. “I think it’s not your stomach, but your brain that’s sick!”
“We’re divorced now, the agreement is over, and you still want to cross the line with me? How shameless can you be!”
The more she spoke, the angrier she became. She almost slapped him, but stopped just before his face.
Forget it—this man was too shameless; who knew what filth he’d fling onto her if she struck him?
“You loathe being intimate with me so much?” Shen Yan asked unhappily.
He was only testing her, yet her reaction was so strong.
“What else? Should I feel honored?”
With that, Ye Yaoyao shoved Shen Yan away and stood, keeping her distance.
“Shen Yan, I’m here today because of your stomach illness. Don’t overthink it.”
