The next morning, Bai Nianxuan slowly opened her sleepy eyes, greeted by Bai Yue’s gentle face.

“Sister…”

Bai Nianxuan murmured softly, her voice tinged with the huskiness of just waking up.

“Yes, I’m here.”

Bai Yue smiled gently at her, then stood up to help Bai Nianxuan rise from bed.

A moment later, Bai Nianxuan was standing, head tilted as she gazed curiously at Bai Yue.

“Sister, my tummy is so hungry.”

She looked at Bai Yue with pleading eyes, her words laced with childish charm. “I want to eat, or I’ll never grow taller.”

Listening to Bai Nianxuan’s soft, sweet complaints, Bai Yue smiled faintly. “Then let your sister figure something out.”

Her eyes overflowed with tenderness.

“Alright.”

Bai Nianxuan reached out her little hand, pulling Bai Yue’s delicate fingers. “Sister, I love you!”

With that, Bai Nianxuan gave her a sweet smile, so adorable it melted straight into Bai Yue’s heart, leaving her momentarily dazed.

“Mmm…”

Bai Yue’s lips curled into a gentle smile. “Sister loves you too, Nianxuan.”

Warmth flooded Bai Yue’s heart—this was what it felt like to have a little sister. Soft, affectionate, and so good at being sweet. That simple “I love you” was pure sugar, dissolving the ice within her heart.

Led by Bai Yue, Bai Nianxuan walked toward the palace doors.

“Your Highness.”

Beiqing stood by the entrance, bowing in a simple gesture of respect.

“Do you have any instructions?”

Beiqing lowered her head, asking in a quiet voice.

Bai Yue paused, then said, “We’d like something to eat.”

Beiqing immediately knelt, her voice reverent. “Please forgive me, Your Highness. It was careless of me.”

Sweat broke on her brow, and fear flickered in her eyes.

“No matter, it’s a small thing. Please have someone prepare it quickly.”

Seeing Beiqing’s fearful demeanor, Bai Yue spoke softly, her gentle nature unwilling to make an issue of such trivialities.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Beiqing moved swiftly, and soon a sumptuous breakfast was laid out on the table.

Bai Yue, arm in arm with Bai Nianxuan, took their seats, eyes drawn to the array of food before them.

“Your Highness, in future, if you have any instructions, simply voice them. Beiqing is your personal maid, always at your service.”

Beiqing knelt at Bai Yue’s feet, speaking solemnly.

“We want to go outside. Is that possible?”

“Where does Your Highness wish to go?”

“To leave Heart City. Send us back to the Sanctuary Alliance.”

Bai Yue spoke without hesitation. She had no wish to remain in this dark city where sunlight never touched. She wanted to take her sister home to the Priest’s Sanctuary.

“I’m sorry, I cannot do that.”

Beiqing bowed her head. “It is the Emperor’s command.”

“Anything else, I can carry out, but not this.”

Within the demon clan, defying the Demon God Emperor Fengxiu meant certain death. For her own life, Beiqing would never disobey his orders.

“Oh.”

The light in Bai Yue’s eyes dimmed instantly. She turned to Bai Nianxuan, saying, “Let’s eat first, Nianxuan.”

Their breakfast was lavish: nutritious beast eggs, crispy and tender beast meat, fragrant pastries, buns, steamed bread, meat broth, fruits, and vegetables—a feast of variety.

Such fare was the privilege of priests in the Sanctuary Alliance and the highest honor among the demon clan. Food was scarce for most lower demons, who often worried about their next meal, while only the elite enjoyed plenty. And such diversity could be found only among the high-ranking clans under the top ten Demon Gods.

“Eat more eggs.”

Bai Yue watched Bai Nianxuan with gentle eyes, speaking softly.

Her words and demeanor were so tender, she cared for Bai Nianxuan as a mother would.

After breakfast, their hunger satisfied, Bai Nianxuan stretched languidly, happily saying, “Sister, I’m so full.”

“I really want to go outside.”

She gazed longingly toward the palace doors. She yearned to explore, but was afraid of the Demon God Emperor Fengxiu.

Her fear stemmed from her weakness; once she grew stronger, she would no longer be afraid.

Seeing her longing, Bai Yue gently stroked her hair. “Be good, Nianxuan. We’ll just stay here for now, no wandering.”

“This dark city has nothing fun. When we return to the Priest’s Sanctuary, I’ll take you to play.”

Her gentle touch and soft voice made Bai Nianxuan feel as though she were in her mother’s arms.

“Okay.”

Bai Nianxuan nodded, a well-behaved smile lighting her face.

“The Emperor arrives!”

A cold voice echoed from outside, freezing the very air. Bai Yue and Bai Nianxuan’s expressions changed instantly.

Bai Nianxuan moved her chair closer to Bai Yue, lowered her head, and nestled into her sister’s embrace—she wanted nothing to do with the Demon God Emperor Fengxiu.

She feared this icy man, especially the emotionless look in his eyes.

Bai Yue held Nianxuan tightly, savoring her softness.

“Yue’er.”

The Demon God Emperor Fengxiu sat opposite them, his tone grave. “Your father has come to share breakfast with you.”

Bai Yue’s face paled. “No need, we’ve already eaten.”

“After all, we lowly humans are not worthy to dine with the noble, mighty Demon God Emperor.”

Her gentle voice carried a hint of displeasure. She never showed Fengxiu a welcoming face. She hated him.

Fengxiu’s eyes lowered, and he spoke solemnly. “You are my daughter, you are certainly worthy.”

“I know you still hold a grudge over that matter, but I wish to make amends, to help you let it go.”

“No need for persuasion. Unless you die, I will never let it go.”

Bai Yue stared coldly at him; the tenderness in her dark eyes replaced by endless frost.

Her hatred for Fengxiu was so deep that his very presence unsettled her.

“Yue’er, do you like stories? Let me tell you about your mother and me.”

Fengxiu ignored her anger, lowering himself to coax her. For Bai Yue, he felt deep remorse. He wanted to make amends to his long-suffering, wounded eldest daughter.

This was the only daughter he and Bai Lingxuan had.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

Bai Yue raised her voice. “I’ll say it again: unless you go down and join my mother, I will never forgive you!”

“Why are you alive, while my mother is dead?”

“Amends? What use are your so-called amends?”

She glared at him, fury blazing in her eyes.

They were not father and daughter, but enemies.

As their argument continued, Bai Nianxuan did her best to fade into the background.

PS: A note on Bai Yue’s character. In my vision, she is gentle yet strong. From the beginning of the original work to its conclusion, she only forgave Demon God Emperor Fengxiu when he was close to death, so I made this deduction. Tomorrow’s update is a trial run; I hope everyone will support this book. If there’s no update at midnight, it’ll be posted in the evening—three books are hard to write all at once!
