Chapter 134: Qilin's Comfort
Chapter 134: Qilin at Ease
In the forest, the tanks had ceased their bombardment, leading the Saber Special Forces inside to believe it was finally time for them to enter the fray.
At the signal of their squad leaders, they raised the hand cannons mounted on their arms and advanced as quietly and cautiously as possible.
Though the distance was only a little over five hundred meters, they dared not make too much noise. The sniper inside had just bathed them in artillery fire and killed five of their comrades.
Rose and Qilin watched the Saber Special Forces approaching through the forest ahead while listening to the gunfire behind them. Clearly, the two of them had already been surrounded.
Yet neither showed the slightest hint of panic. Qilin used Divine Punishment to search for targets, while Rose diverted the bullets fired at them from behind to one side.
The two sides remained locked in a tense stalemate until an ugly figure appeared in Qilin’s scope. Without the slightest hesitation, a flash of red streaked through the air, and Godslayer One pierced his skull.
When his comrade collapsed with a thud, the four men around him snapped. Their taut nerves broke, and they unleashed a wild barrage toward the direction from which the red light had come.
Amid the chaotic gunfire came the sound of laser weapons firing.
Qilin looked at the trees more than a hundred meters away, which were being subjected to a relentless bombardment, and could not help curling the corners of her lips. Wasn’t it only natural to feel happy when the enemy was wasting ammunition?
After firing for a while, the Saber squad leader raised his hand and signaled them to stop. In his view, the enemy had not retaliated for so long that there were only two possibilities: they had either been killed or fled.
Either way, they needed to inspect the results.
He waved for the three men behind him to move ahead, then resumed the quiet, cautious manner with which they had begun, following them as they slowly crept toward the distant attack site.
Qilin seemed to have anticipated their actions. She did not move from her position, continuing to aim Divine Punishment at the place they had been firing upon.
Before long, three more ugly heads appeared in her scope. She took a deep breath, steadied it, and fired three shots in succession.
The three Saber soldiers fell at once.
Seeing his comrades gunned down in less than three seconds, the squad leader did not dare move again. Pressing his body tightly against a tree, he tremblingly drew a flare and aimed it toward the direction where he had just seen the red light.
With a sharp whistle, a glowing red sphere appeared above the two women. Everyone in the forest looked up at the same time. The Saber Special Forces and the ordinary Northern Oath troops outside the forest all rushed toward that position.
Qilin’s expression changed.
“We have to go. We’re about to be surrounded.”
She spoke as she reached out to pull Rose up and flee again, but Rose did not move. Instead, she grabbed Qilin, causing the completely unprepared woman to stumble.
Qilin turned toward her in confusion.
Rose said nothing. She merely curved her lips into a smile, brought Qilin to a tree, and gestured for her to continue.
Only then did Qilin realize that she had a master of wormholes beside her. Why run at all? She could simply stand her ground and fire, then change positions once the enemy came close.
How comfortable.
Watching the shadowy figures moving through the forest, Qilin did not hesitate. Divine Punishment fired repeatedly from her hands. Every shot sent a rapidly moving figure crashing to the ground, never to rise again.
As one comrade after another fell around them, the Saber soldiers advancing rapidly grew extremely tense, terrified that they would be the next to die.
Retreat was not an option they had considered. Their only choice was to accelerate, so the enemy sniper would not have time to fire at them.
Once enough of them entered attack range, they would be able to tear the sniper apart—not to mention a machine gunner.
As they sped up, Qilin fired three more shots. By then, she could see their savage expressions with the naked eye.
That also meant Qilin had entered their attack range. Several of them raised their hand cannons and fired three blasts directly at her before continuing their charge without slowing.
Looking at the attacks flying toward her, Qilin did not panic. Instead, she formed a strange smile.
After three booming explosions, the special forces soldiers at the front reached the base of the tree. Without a moment’s thought, they tensed their legs and launched themselves toward the treetop.
But they found nothing there.
He spun around in confusion, only to discover that Qilin’s graceful figure had vanished.
Just as he was about to say something, a streak of red shot from behind the entire squad and struck the transformed demon who had been trying to speak.
The sudden turn of events left the others stunned. Then they realized that the black-armored sniper seemed to possess supernatural abilities. She had already moved behind them.
Without hesitation, several orders were issued. All the transformed demons scattered instantly, then charged again in the direction from which the bullets had come.
Before long, they saw Qilin once more. This time, however, they did not attempt to approach her. They attacked directly with their hand cannons.
When Rose saw that none of the enemies were charging them, she did not flee again. She simply opened a wormhole gate in front of the two of them and frantically redirected the energy blasts flying toward them.
Qilin, meanwhile, calmly picked off the transformed demons below one by one until they no longer dared expose themselves.
The stalemate lasted less than a minute before two transformed demons circled around behind the women and lunged directly at Qilin.
Unfortunately for them, their strength as first-generation super soldiers was utterly incomparable to Rose’s. She kicked each of them once and sent them flying back to the ground.
The transformed demons felt a sudden weakness spread through their bodies as they lay there. They could not even stand.
Before they could figure out what had happened, Qilin shot each of them once.
After that, none of the transformed demons dared risk closing in. Instead, they increased their hand cannons to maximum power and unleashed a furious barrage at the two women.
Rose had been redirecting the attacks with relative ease, but the increased power of the hand cannons soon began to overwhelm her.
She had no choice but to take Qilin and teleport them once more, changing their position again.
Although Qilin was somewhat bewildered, she did not ask any questions. She simply resumed her assault on the remaining transformed demons.
At that moment, Yun Yang had just finished cutting every tank that had not suffered a catastrophic explosion in half. The transport aircraft in the sky had only just come to a stop when rows of soldiers in exoskeleton armor descended from it and flew into the air, eager to witness the battle.
The soldiers had barely formed up when they opened fire on the surviving Northern Oath forces. With the reinforcements joining the fight, the Northern Oath troops whom Yun Yang had not personally dealt with suffered devastating casualties.
Even so, they showed no intention of surrendering. They simply dropped to the ground and began firing at those who had ambushed them.
Although the soldiers had armored protection, it only allowed them to withstand a few additional bullets. They belonged to a ground combat brigade—an elite force by ordinary standards, but not a space-based corps of enhanced warriors.
Their armor was merely ordinary alloy, without any dark alloy components. Its strength was therefore insufficient, and concentrated fire could still penetrate it.
When several soldiers suddenly collapsed, Yun Yang froze.
He had assumed that armored soldiers would be able to withstand ordinary bullets and charge forward. He had never expected them to be killed by conventional ammunition.
Once he recovered from his surprise, Yun Yang instantly linked himself to every soldier and did his best to treat those who had not suffered fatal injuries.
He no longer had any interest in watching the battle. The soldiers’ lives were far more precious.
He shot into the temporary position of the Northern Oath forces.
The King Sword in his hand was withdrawn into the dark plane and replaced by a Silver Blade-class flying sword. Under Yun Yang’s command, it darted rapidly through the battlefield.
It focused on the particularly stubborn Northern Oath soldiers who continued firing wildly, even ignoring the enemies who were shooting directly at Yun Yang.
At that moment, Yun Yang almost hoped that everyone would attack him. That way, the soldiers behind him could stand in place and fire at their leisure.
Meanwhile, the Saber Special Forces facing the elusive sniper had begun to panic.
Every time they attacked the black-armored sniper, she vanished. Their side was left with several corpses, yet they had not even managed to touch a single hair on her head. The pressure was simply too great.
But their faith in Morgana compelled them to continue attacking despite their fear.
Queen Morgana wanted only fearless warriors. Only those who bravely died without fear would be granted an audience with the queen and receive immense power and eternal life.
Then a communication came through: an order from the leader of the Northern Oath forces, instructing them to retreat.
With that message, the transformed demons suddenly had a reason to withdraw. It was not that they were afraid—it was simply that they had received orders.
After a few brief words were relayed, every surviving member of the Saber Special Forces left the battlefield at the fastest speed of their lives.
The remaining Northern Oath troops had already been abandoned by their leader. They were being used to delay the angel and buy precious time for the Saber Special Forces to retreat.
The battle continued for another half hour. Only when the Northern Oath soldiers’ faith finally crumbled beneath the pressure of death and they fled in rout did the fighting come to an end.
The Northern Oath troops had been thoroughly broken. No one had any intention of taking prisoners. There was no need.
They had invaded the border, worshiped demons, and committed countless atrocities that had enraged both heaven and earth.
In the hearts of the soldiers, such men could only die. Even if they survived this time, they would perish during the next campaign to wipe them out.
After briefly clearing the battlefield, Yun Yang worked alongside the military medics to treat the wounded soldiers.
Thanks to the protection of their armor, the number of fatalities was not high, but there were still many wounded.
With Yun Yang present, the medics only needed to remove the bullets. Yun Yang could then restore the soldiers to health as quickly and comfortably as possible, without even leaving scars.
Some soldiers even joked that because they had no scars, Yun Yang had taken away their medals and should compensate them.
To such ungrateful men who wanted both the advantage and the complaint, Yun Yang said they could shoot themselves if they liked—wherever they wanted—but he would not treat injuries they inflicted on themselves.
As one wounded soldier after another recovered, they returned to the border defense camp. The camp was somewhat undermanned, but it certainly had no shortage of medics.
