Chapter 76: The Escort Mission
Upon hearing Qianshuang’s explanation, Bai Feiyu suddenly understood, and in that moment grasped the reasoning behind it all.
The various sects needed to compete with each other, for this directly affected the quality of disciples they could recruit in the future, as well as the allocation of cultivation resources.
Good cultivation resources and outstanding disciples could allow a sect to flourish overnight. For example, the group of brothers from his dormitory had followed him, and with improved resources, they were able to enter the inner sect directly. It must be known that entering the inner sect was the dream of countless outer sect disciples.
And yet, they had achieved this so effortlessly, simply because they chose to follow Bai Feiyu, to place their bets on him.
Therefore, when it came to the sect level, the benefits could be beyond imagination.
If the advantage for a mere outer sect disciple was already so great, what then at the level of the entire sect?
Take for instance a sect as grand as the Return to Void Sect—if it wished to expand, it needed resources, disciples, and opportunities. At this stage, expansion became extremely difficult, much like breaking through to a new realm in the later stages of cultivation.
“I understand now!” Bai Feiyu nodded.
Qianshuang nodded as well and said, “This time, with you in our academy, no matter what, you are bound to become a dark horse.”
At her words, Bai Feiyu could only offer a wry smile.
The only thing he feared was that during the sect tournament, those disciples who had been chased by his war puppet in the Toba Ruins would recognize him. After all, he had publicly admitted to being a disciple of the Return to Void Sect at that time.
If he wanted to deceive others, to make them doubt that he was truly from Return to Void Sect, then at the tournament, everyone would recall his face, and all the enmity currently directed at the Golden Light Sect would shift to target Return to Void Sect instead.
All he could hope was that, when the time came, the sect leader who knew the details would not blame him...
After all, he had not brought any benefit to the sect by doing this. Without any advantage gained, whether the sect leader would forgive him was uncertain, especially since he had drawn so much unnecessary hatred.
“There’s one more thing, Brother Feiyu,” Qianshuang continued, “There’s an escort mission in the sect, and I’ve accepted it.”
“However, this mission requires several people to work together. Right now, I believe you are an excellent candidate.”
“After all, the other disciples on the Heavenly Ranking are all in seclusion. Besides, it’s not easy to find someone with your level of combat ability.”
“So, Brother Feiyu, shall we complete this mission together?” Qianshuang looked at Bai Feiyu, her smile sweet.
Bai Feiyu considered for a moment and found the idea feasible.
He was already unoccupied in the sect, idling away each day, so going out for a while sounded like a good idea. Moreover, the fact that Qianshuang had chosen him specifically indicated that the escort mission was very important and likely to encounter plenty of unexpected troubles.
Bai Feiyu actually relished such unpredictable challenges.
Wherever there was trouble, that was where he would be!
“Alright, no problem,” Bai Feiyu replied cheerfully, then added, “Has the team been filled yet? If not, bring my little brother Yang Fan along.”
“That kid just started following me, probably still unconvinced. He needs a proper chance to get used to having me as his big brother.”
“Otherwise, after some time apart, he might grow distant or even forget that I’m his big brother, which would be awkward...”
Bai Feiyu’s consideration was quite thorough.
To ensure nothing went wrong and to avoid any unexpected disasters, he deliberately decided to bring Yang Fan along.
After all, this mission was very important. After his previous experience fighting alongside the war puppet in the Toba Ruins, Bai Feiyu realized that if too many enemies appeared, even if he could win, there would always be some things he couldn’t handle alone.
If someone got hurt, what then? If there was a problem with the mission, Qianshuang, as the sect leader’s daughter, might be absolved from blame, but would he have to pay compensation?
He had only just begun to enjoy the fruits of his success; if he suddenly had to pay compensation, he simply couldn’t accept it.
“Brother Yang Fan? Brother Feiyu, isn’t that a bit much...” Qianshuang hesitated.
Yang Fan had become Bai Feiyu’s little brother and was still unhappy about it. And now Bai Feiyu wanted to drag him along for the mission.
On the road, “little brother” would be mentioned at every turn.
Brother Yang Fan might just lose his mind.
In the end, the greatest instability might shift from outside threats to internal discord. They would have to worry about what would happen if Yang Fan and Bai Feiyu ended up fighting—what would become of the goods?
“What’s wrong with that?” Bai Feiyu replied righteously. “Don’t worry, there won’t be any issues between us.”
“I know what you’re concerned about, but I won’t resort to force. I’ll win Yang Fan over with virtue. Only after he witnesses my true abilities will he willingly follow me. Otherwise, he’ll never truly acknowledge me as his big brother.”
“Besides, I’m not a child. I won’t deliberately provoke him. You can rest assured.”
Bai Feiyu was convinced that bringing Yang Fan along was absolutely necessary.
It was a rare opportunity that could not be missed.
Seeing Bai Feiyu’s insistence, Qianshuang had no choice but to nod, silently praying that Bai Feiyu would keep his promise.
“Very well, Brother Feiyu. Tomorrow morning, I’ll meet you at the gate of your courtyard.”
“We’ll set out together for the mission and call for Brother Yang Fan.”
“This time, there will be four of us. I’m not yet sure who the last person will be, but this is an important mission. Except for you, everyone else must be at least at the eighth level of the Supreme Qi Realm.”
Qianshuang spoke earnestly.
Bai Feiyu nodded, and with that, Qianshuang took her leave.
Bai Feiyu returned to his own courtyard. As he approached, he noticed that his neighbor had already moved out, while Yang Fan was moving in with a dark expression on his face.
When Yang Fan saw Bai Feiyu, his face grew even darker.
“So now, we have two strong contenders from the Heavenly Ranking living here—not just Bai Feiyu, but Yang Fan as well.”
“Did Yang Fan eat something strange? Why is he moving here of all places? What happened?”
“I’m not clear either. I heard the two of them just fought a duel?”
“What’s going on? Did Yang Fan fall for Bai Feiyu after the fight?”
