Chapter 150: You Ask Me, I Ask Whom?
Under the leadership of Bai Feiyu, the disciples of the Return to Ruins Sect foraged for wild vegetables and hunted game, eventually gathering a substantial amount of food.
However, the disciples of the Return to Ruins Sect harbored some misgivings. Could this food really be eaten?
Looking at Bai Feiyu’s resolute and confident expression, the disciples ultimately decided to trust him. After all, Bai Feiyu had no intention of harming them.
Shortly after, everyone followed Bai Feiyu down the mountain, having already gathered all the necessary firewood.
Upon arriving near the military camp, Bai Feiyu directed everyone to clear the surrounding area and set up a large iron pot. He then borrowed kitchen knives and other utensils from the camp kitchen, skinned the game, and washed the wild vegetables.
Everything was tossed into the massive pot together, creating a giant stew.
"I'll tend the fire!"
Yang Fan was brimming with enthusiasm. Clearly a novice at this sort of thing, he was as excited as a child.
Seeing how eager the fellow was, Bai Feiyu handed the fire-tending duty directly over to him. Everyone else then stood around, watching the stew bubble away with eager anticipation.
After a long while, an appetizing aroma began to waft from the pot, astonishing many. Roughly half an hour later, the giant stew was ready.
"Everyone, just make do with this. We only have these conditions, so don't blame me."
Bai Feiyu glanced at the disciples and chuckled before they picked up their mess tins and began dishing out the food.
It had to be said that the flavor was actually quite decent.
To be honest, this was the first time these disciples had ever eaten wild vegetables. While it could not compare to the spirit rice of their sect, having something was far better than having nothing at all.
Everyone tucked in heartily, consuming a large majority of the meal and leaving only a small portion remaining in the pot.
"Alright, alright. Everyone wash your bowls. As for the rest, we'll just wait for further instructions."
Seeing this scene, Bai Feiyu sighed inwardly. Under the current circumstances, why hadn't these people come to tell them what to do? Were they just expected to stand around watching the battle indefinitely?
The crucial point was that watching the battle was completely impractical anyway.
Fighting was raging on the walls of the border fortress, and going up there to take a look would only risk getting in the way of the other soldiers.
This was precisely the helpless predicament Bai Feiyu and his companions faced.
As the sky grew dark, many people began preparing for sleep, knowing that if they didn't rest, they might be rudely awakened at the crack of dawn.
***
At the break of dawn the next day.
Just as all the disciples were immersed in sweet dreams, heavy footsteps suddenly strode into the military camp.
The continuous sounds of shouting and fighting outside through the previous night had prevented anyone from getting a proper night's sleep, causing them to drift off very late. Acknowledging the arrival of footsteps at this hour, many disciples felt a wave of resentment, yet they forced their eyes open. They then saw an officer leading a new batch of Return to Ruins Sect disciples walking toward them.
"Look, these are the people your Return to Ruins Sect sent yesterday. You'll be staying here for the time being."
The officer instructed the second batch of disciples.
The new arrivals stared wide-eyed, taking in the living conditions of their fellow disciples with internal shock.
After all, they never imagined that survival on the battlefield would look like this.
"Uh, you're here. Since you've arrived, find somewhere to rest for a while. We still need to sleep; the fighting was too loud last night, so we couldn't get a decent rest. We'll explain the rules here once we wake up. Oh, if you're hungry, there's food in the pot, and the embers haven't gone out yet—just heat it up yourselves."
One disciple forced his eyes open with great difficulty to address the newcomers before falling right back asleep.
Bai Feiyu and the others, seeing that their own people had arrived, didn't think much of it and decided to grab a bit more rest while they could.
The newly arrived disciples were understandably astonished to see how Bai Feiyu's group had survived their first full day.
However, these disciples quickly came to their senses: this was a battlefield.
There were no luxuries on a battlefield. While the environment left much to be desired, it was at least tolerable for the time being.
With no other choice, they sat down to the side and waited for Bai Feiyu and the others to wake up.
Bai Feiyu and his group slept until nearly noon before getting up, taking their sweet time to tidy up without paying the slightest attention to the new arrivals.
Unable to hold back any longer, one of the new disciples finally stepped forward and asked Bai Feiyu:
"Bai Feiyu, we've arrived. What are we supposed to be doing?"
"Yeah, we can't just idle around here forever."
"I noticed the other disciples seem to take their cues from you. Could you explain things to us?"
Having missed yesterday's events and with the officer having left in a hurry, these disciples had no choice but to turn to Bai Feiyu.
Bai Feiyu gave a large yawn, glanced at the sky, and said:
"Right now, there's nothing that needs to be done. Oh, by the way, you guys didn't finish all the food, did you?"
"Yesterday, we already did all the chores we were supposed to do. As for what's happening on the battlefield right now, we can't intervene."
"The officer told us to wait here until someone comes to organize us into combat units."
"So, you should just rest for now."
Faced with Bai Feiyu's seemingly irresponsible remarks, the new disciples were dumbfounded. They had originally anticipated that arriving at the battlefield would plunge them into thrilling, perilous situations where they would constantly face powerful enemies.
Now, it appeared that Bai Feiyu and his group were simply bored out of their minds.
"Hey, get up. You're being far too irresponsible."
"We came here to fight a war, not to rest."
Filled with a sense of righteous indignation, many of the new disciples expressed deep dissatisfaction with Bai Feiyu's attitude. Given that his cultivation level was the highest among them, these disciples naturally looked to him to take charge.
Bai Feiyu retorted irritably:
"That's exactly what the officer told us yesterday, and we've already finished everything we were asked to do."
"Right now, you're free to chat, gossip, or even cultivate if you want. Nobody's stopping you."
"Don't ask me what we're supposed to do—who am I supposed to ask? This is simply how things are right now, so we just have to wait patiently."
At this moment, even Bai Feiyu felt a prickle of annoyance. These fellows had a problem and the very first thing they did was come looking for him to solve it.
He damn well wasn't the person in charge here. Asking him was a waste of time; they would be better off finding something to occupy themselves.
However, there was simply no work left for them to do within this military camp. All they could do was wait.
They would just have to wait until the officer finally remembered they existed and came over to assign them duties.
