Chapter 57: Utter Madness!
Shen Yao’s battle was bold and unrestrained. Even when surrounded by the wolf pack, she showed no fear, relentlessly pursuing the Gale Wolves. Had their speed not been so swift, she might have slaughtered her way through them already.
Lin Xiao, on the other hand, fought with much more caution. The Gale Wolves kept launching attacks at him, but few actually managed to land a hit. If he couldn’t evade, Lin Xiao would use his bound hands and legs to block, and if he couldn’t block, he’d avoid vital spots.
He wasn’t letting the Gale Wolves off easily either; he had already killed two more. Yet, the number of wolves around him didn’t decrease, for those that had finished off the other close-combat fighters had come to support this side.
Lin Xiao felt himself stretched thin as the Gale Wolves formed a tight circle around him, even launching stealthy attacks from places he couldn’t see. The wounds on his body increased.
If not for his keen sense of danger, he might have been teleported out by Murong Yu already. Lin Xiao knew this couldn’t go on.
He glanced around the battlefield. Zhou Zhi and Chu Ran couldn’t be counted on for now; their pressure was no less than his own. He looked at Shen Yao, still chasing the Gale Wolves, and sighed inwardly at her ferocity.
At this point, he could only cooperate with Shen Yao.
“Shen Yao, stop chasing them. Let’s work together, or this won’t end well!”
Shen Yao heard Lin Xiao’s shout and halted her pursuit. She too noticed his predicament; if things continued, Lin Xiao’s elimination was only a matter of time.
Although she was wary of Lin Xiao, seeing him as her greatest obstacle in the quest for first place, now was not the time to let him be eliminated.
If Lin Xiao were eliminated, the enemies she faced would double, and with the lurking Shadow Wolf watching for its chance, her own elimination would be inevitable.
She didn’t want to be eliminated like this—even if she ended up with the highest score, it wouldn’t be satisfying. She wanted to kill the Shadow Wolf herself!
With this in mind, Shen Yao swung her Gale Wolf weapon and moved toward Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao seized the opportunity, advancing toward Shen Yao. Soon, the two had joined forces.
“Back to back—we can ease some pressure this way.”
Shen Yao agreed; it was indeed much easier. Although it had seemed she was chasing the Gale Wolves to hack them apart, she hadn’t killed many. Lin Xiao, meanwhile, had slain six or seven in a short time; she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy.
“Alright! Let’s see who kills more!”
Lin Xiao laughed at her words.
“No problem! Who’s afraid of whom? Be careful, or I might steal your first place!”
“That’s a bit difficult—unless you kill the Shadow Wolf or eliminate me, taking first place might be tough!”
She spoke offhandedly, but Lin Xiao paid close attention. Though he couldn’t see the scoreboard, he didn’t think Shen Yao would make such claims without reason.
It seemed Shen Yao’s score was much higher than his own.
Annoying, indeed—he had no intention of giving up that two million! Who would ever think they have too much money?
He shook his head, clearing away unrealistic thoughts. Now was not the time to worry about scores; surviving this crisis came first.
Clearly, Shen Yao thought the same. They stood back to back, launching attacks against the Gale Wolves.
Despite their rivalry, neither tried to trip up the other.
Soon, they were fighting side by side against the Gale Wolves.
With their backs protected, Lin Xiao could focus on the wolves ahead, while Shen Yao masterfully handled her side, not letting a single attack reach Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao reciprocated, not allowing any Gale Wolf to slip past and harm Shen Yao.
At this point, sheer numbers were no longer an advantage. Sometimes, several Gale Wolves attacked simultaneously, but instead of overwhelming the pair, their lack of coordination hindered their own actions.
Lin Xiao and Shen Yao quickly picked up on this, always seizing the right moment to kill one or two wolves.
With this tactic, the number of Gale Wolves besieging them dwindled rapidly.
Not long after, only a handful remained.
With fewer enemies, the pressure eased considerably.
Seizing this respite, the two finally had a chance to observe their surroundings.
What they saw startled them.
At some point, only the two of them were left.
Chu Ran and Zhou Zhi had both disappeared.
They knew what this meant: everyone else had been eliminated.
Indeed, as Lin Xiao and Shen Yao focused on their battle, Chu Ran had engaged the remaining Gale Wolves. Initially, it was a long-range exchange, but after casualties on both sides, the wolves shifted strategy. Some continued their assault, while others bypassed Lin Xiao and Shen Yao, charging straight at Chu Ran and his group.
The result was obvious. Barely holding on, Chu Ran and his companions were marked for elimination.
When Zhou Zhi was eliminated, he had wanted to call for Lin Xiao’s help, but seeing Lin Xiao and Shen Yao themselves surrounded, he gave up.
Forget it. Lasting this long was achievement enough.
He let himself be eliminated in silence.
Chu Ran, using his lightning abilities, held out the longest, but facing several Gale Wolves, he too fell in the end.
After Chu Ran and his group were eliminated, only Lin Xiao and Shen Yao remained.
Shen Yao now clearly realized this.
With her back to Lin Xiao, she looked at the dwindling Gale Wolves and gave a wry smile.
“Well, it’s just the two of us now. What do you plan to do? Give up, or go all out?”
Lin Xiao exhaled softly.
“I still want to fight for first place, so giving up is out of the question. Of course, if you want to give up, could you let me have the kill?”
Shen Yao: o(′^`)o
“Wishful thinking! Giving you the kill is impossible. Since that’s the case, let’s go wild—I want to see just how far we can go!”
Lin Xiao made no comment. There were still twenty Gale Wolves left, not easy to deal with, and the Shadow Wolf was still watching from the sidelines, not intervening yet.
But Lin Xiao wouldn’t ignore it; the one to deliver the final blow would likely be that creature.
But so what?
At this point, not giving it their all would be a disservice to themselves.
He was already assured a spot in the top ten, but the reward difference between second and ninth place and first was a cool one and a half million.
For the sake of that money, he would let himself go utterly wild!
