Chapter 115 — Lin Chong Strikes Again
Mu Ran cast a sidelong glance at Lin Chong. Her face, already weary, betrayed a hint of helpless exasperation. "You really dropped the ball this time..."
"Heh, I can't drink anymore. It messes things up too much. Every time I do, my eyelids twitch like something is about to happen, but when I try to divine it, I can't calculate a single thing. It’s truly infuriating!"
Lin Chong covered his eyes with his large, calloused, and scarred palms, looking utterly perplexed and annoyed.
A moment later, he looked up at the pair in the back seat, who were completely immersed in their own world. His mouth drooped, his expression turned somber, and his tone became heavy and solemn. "Xiao Ran, you really shouldn't go on this business trip. I have a bad feeling about this journey."
As soon as Lin Chong finished speaking, the atmosphere inside the car turned icy and volatile.
Gu Beicheng lifted his gaze, his dark, bottomless eyes locking onto Lin Chong’s worried ones. His face remained calm, revealing no emotion, yet everyone in the car could clearly feel that Gu Beicheng was enraged.
"What do you mean? Do you know something?"
Gu Beicheng did not believe in metaphysics, nor did he believe in fate. As for Gu Xiao falling into the water last night, he simply considered it a coincidence.
Lin Chong opened his mouth slightly, meeting Gu Beicheng’s gaze without fear, his own eyes equally unfathomable. He shook his head at the man. "Gu Beicheng, I know you’ve investigated me, and I know you don't believe a word I say. You don't believe in metaphysics, but I’m telling you, this is something you cannot afford to ignore. I would never deceive Mu Ran, because she holds a special significance to me."
"Whether I believe you or not is none of your concern. Just stay by Ran Ran’s side and behave yourself. I’d best not discover you have any ulterior motives."
Gu Beicheng dismissed Lin Chong’s words. He uncrossed his legs and hooked his thin, cold lips into a smirk, radiating a pointed, chilling aura. He tolerated this man’s presence near Ran Ran, but that didn't mean he trusted him.
"Uh..." Lin Chong’s expression became indescribable. He didn't speak again; instead, he shrugged at Mu Ran, who was staring at him thoughtfully, then leaned back against the seat and closed his eyes for a nap.
Moments later, Lin Chong, who was sitting in the passenger seat, let out an uncontrollable scream. As a man from the Northeast who grew up in a martial arts gym, he was naturally loud and unrestrained.
"Lin Chong! What’s wrong with you? Why are you shouting?"
Mu Ran knew he could be flamboyant and careless, but he was usually quite steady. Could the drinking from last night have damaged his nerves?
"Xiao Ran, Xiao Ran, wait a moment—I think I’m having a seizure."
Gu Beicheng, whose long arm was wrapped tightly around Mu Ran, instinctively checked his watch. The flight was in an hour; time was tight.
"Pull over. Let him get out to have his 'seizure'." Gu Beicheng ordered the driver to stop, intending to kick Lin Chong out.
"Bei, don't let him out yet. Wait."
A hint of nervousness appeared on Mu Ran’s cold, delicate face. If she remembered correctly, Lin Chong had told her recently that if he had a seizure, it would certainly mean something bad was about to happen to her. She believed in Lin Chong, and she believed in metaphysics—because she herself was an existence that science could not explain.
The car stopped on the side of the road to the airport. In the passenger seat, Lin Chong kept his eyes tightly shut, white foam gradually forming at the corners of his mouth, his body twitching periodically. The driver, terrified, pressed himself against the door.
"Mr. Gu..." The driver leaned his head toward the back, panic-stricken. "Mr. Gu, this 'Great Immortal' seems to be possessed. Should we take him to the hospital?"
Gu Beicheng’s eyelids drooped as he rubbed the woman’s soft, tender hand in his palm. As the choking, painful sounds from the passenger seat intensified, he lifted his gaze and gave the sweating driver a cold look. "Go to the airport. He won't die yet."
"Yes, sir."
The driver glanced nervously at the curled-up Lin Chong and pulled out some tissues, kindly wiping the foam from the man’s mouth. "Great Immortal, please don't cast any spells now. Just hold on a little longer; we need to get Miss Mu to the airport first."
The driver was a man in his fifties, a distant relative of the Gu family patriarch. He was honest and kind, but easily swayed by others. Before Mu Ran and Gu Beicheng had gotten into the car, the driver had already fallen for Lin Chong’s relentless stream of nonsense. He firmly believed the bald man beside him was a powerful "Great Immortal" currently in the middle of performing a ritual.
* * *
Suddenly, the driver felt a burst of energy behind the wheel.
"Old Xing, focus on driving." A cold, sharp voice came from the back. Old Xing shuddered and cleared his throat. "Yes, Mr. Gu."
"Brother Lin, are you feeling any better now?" Mu Ran leaned forward, trying to check on him. This seizure had lasted much longer than the last.
"I'm fine, Xiao Ran..." Lin Chong turned abruptly, his bloodshot eyes locking onto hers. "Xiao Ran, something bad is going to happen."
He retreated slightly, casually wiping the foam from his mouth. Suddenly, he turned to the driver and smiled, patting him on the shoulder. "Old Xing, thanks for wiping my mouth earlier. I don't usually read fortunes for people, but you—although you won't be immensely wealthy in this life, you will have a happy and fulfilling one. Especially your daughter; she will definitely get into the top university in China this year."
"Really? Great Immortal?" Old Xing kept his eyes fixed on the road, but his smile was practically reaching his ears.
"Lin Chong, what exactly is going to happen?" Mu Ran sat back, pressing against Gu Beicheng and playing with his hand.
Lin Chong scratched his head, his eyes full of frustration. He sighed. "I didn't foresee it. My mind went completely blank, but I am certain you will be in danger."
"Is anyone accompanying you on this trip?" Lin Chong had wanted to go, but An Lan had stopped him, insisting he serve as the security captain for SY. He still had a meeting to attend there.
Mu Ran looked up. "Gu Xiao and Lan Lan, but I can't reach them right now. I don't even know if they’ll make the flight."
"Uh..." Lin Chong was lost in thought, struggling with whether to tell Mu Ran that those two were currently in the same bed. His room was right next to An Lan’s. After finishing his work at SY, he had been practicing his "X-ray vision"—and he had succeeded! But he had also seen the two of them next door...
"Never mind." He noticed Gu Beicheng eyeing him sharply. After all, it was their private business.
Mu Ran: "What is it?" A plane crash? But aviation technology in China was very advanced. She was heading to Country B to meet the screenwriter of the drama *Cycle*. The screenwriter had broken their legs while traveling and couldn't return home. To avoid delaying production, Gu Xiao had decided to take the leads to visit the screenwriter and discuss the script. What could the danger be?
Mu Ran was baffled. She wondered why she hadn't gained any "cheat codes" after her rebirth—like Lin Chong’s foresight or mind-reading. In this life, aside from her memories and slightly increased strength, she was the same.
Gu Xiao remained silent, eyes closed, sitting quietly in the passenger seat.
"I’ll go with you." Gu Beicheng noticed Mu Ran’s agitation and shot a cold, ruthless look at Lin Chong. He cradled her face, kissing her nose. "Gu Xiao and An Lan probably can't make it. I’ll go with you instead."
Gu Xiao had just sent a message saying he couldn't make it to Country B today. An Lan was with him, so Mu Ran would have to go alone. Gu Xiao had already briefed the screenwriter to ensure her safety.
"No, isn't Yuefeng going public today? What will happen to the company if you leave?" Yuefeng was a brokerage firm under the Chengxing Group. Although only two years old, it was already a leader in the industry. Today was its listing day.
"The company will function fine without me." Gu Beicheng frowned, clearly displeased. He hated it when Mu Ran rejected him so decisively. Between the company and Mu Ran, he chose the latter without hesitation.
Mu Ran insisted, "No."
"Darling, let me go with you. I’m worried you’ll be in danger." He leaned in, his voice a mix of persuasion and undeniable dominance.
Mu Ran met his tender yet gloomy gaze and stubbornly pulled her hand away. Gu Beicheng stared at her, as if he would sulk if she didn't agree. But she didn't care about his threats. "I’m going by myself!"
Gu Beicheng softened. "Then call me when you land."
"Okay." Mu Ran looked away, glancing at the sweating man in the front seat. She couldn't help but wonder why Lin Chong was reacting so strongly today. Was she really in danger?
Suddenly, Lin Chong woke with a start, his voice cold and sharp. "No!" His entire demeanor shifted; he looked chillingly terrifying. "Xiao Ran, I’ll go with you. I won't let anything happen to you, don't worry."
He spoke to Mu Ran with solemn righteousness. "And Mr. Gu, you don't need to look at me like that. My feelings for Mu Ran are as pure as they get. You don't need to look at me like a romantic rival."
Mu Ran chuckled and patted Gu Beicheng’s chest. "Don't worry, with Lin Chong by my side, I’ll be fine."
Gu Beicheng’s fierce, violent gaze shifted away from Lin Chong, turning incredibly gentle as he stroked her head with indulgence and attachment. "I’ll wait for you."
When they reached the airport, the two walked into the VIP channel. Before leaving, Lin Chong turned back. "Oh, by the way, Mr. Gu, tell Gu Xiao when you get back that we saved his life."
Gu Beicheng didn't understand, his lips pressed thin, his hawk-like eyes fixed on Lin Chong. Anyone else would have been terrified, but Lin Chong—who had seen all sorts of ghosts and monsters—wouldn't be intimidated by a mere human glare.
"Mm. Take care of her."
