Gu Xi noticed the system’s prompt and opened the manual. Lines of blue text unfolded before her eyes.

Still uncertain if the danger had truly passed, she tried to close the page but searched in vain—there was no skip button at all!

Turning, she moved to a secluded corner. After making sure no one could ambush her from behind, she held her Winchester shotgun steady and returned her gaze to the manual.

“Rodents: These creatures did not exist 10,000 years ago.”

“As the Floating Island was the first military experimental site, numerous outstanding researchers were brought to Lingdu.”

“With the progress of experiments, the Floating Island offered excellent benefits.”

Su Chen sighed. What director? In his generation, all the teachers and directors were cybernetic holograms.

Virtual beings taught them, after all.

“The teachers are virtual, and the director is too—I’ve never met him. A portrait hangs on the wall; he apparently passed away thousands of years ago,” Su Chen explained helplessly.

“How did he die?” Gu Xi calmed herself but spoke with bitter anger, almost through gritted teeth.

“Of course, natural causes—birth, aging, sickness, and death. What else?” Su Chen scratched his head, puzzled.

Why did they suddenly switch to discussing the director after dealing with that strange place?

Gu Xi felt this answer was far too easy on him!

He ruined innocent lives, yet died so peacefully!

If it were her, she’d make him suffer until he realized the magnitude of his crimes!

She recalled being one of those unawakened people herself; if she had lived in that era, would she have been turned into a Rodent too?

A chill ran down her spine, gripped by boundless fear.

Thankfully, the system’s prompt brought Gu Xi back to reality.

Without hesitation, she swiftly fled the prison warden’s room.

Judging by the manual, the woman locked in the cage was likely the child the director had imprisoned.

Yet, surviving repeated blood extractions for so long was impressive.

She and Su Chen escaped together.

“Where to now?” Su Chen asked.

“I found a way out. Come with me.” Gu Xi was too tired to explain it was the system’s prompt.

Leaving this cursed place was the priority.

Earlier, Su Chen’s illusion had shown graves on the Floating Island.

So the illusion was probably based on reality.

“So, how did you know something was wrong with them?” Su Chen pursued.

Gu Xi didn’t want to explain, worried she’d seem like she had a sixth sense.

“I’ll just say it’s my sixth sense. Do you believe me?” she replied with a raised eyebrow.

Su Chen had no response—impressive!

In his mind, the woman before him grew more formidable by the moment.

How many things remained unknown?

He was deeply curious.

Nearby, Gu Xi saw the man quiet down and smiled softly to herself.
