Chapter Fourteen: The Secret of the Ratfolk

Gu Xi couldn’t bring herself to eat the food before her. Her curiosity was not about eating or drinking, nor about being a guest here. She was simply not in the mood. On the other hand, she had somewhat figured out this place. Properly human-shaped people were locked up in cages. Although they were called chiefs, it was clear they never enjoyed any privileges that a chief might have. Furthermore, the food here was definitely not to her taste; otherwise, she wouldn’t be so thin. It seemed she was somewhat lost in her own world. Despite this, the mouse people before her showed her great respect.
Su Chen noticed Gu Xi’s silence and gently nudged her shoulder. “Hey, do you think if we eat this food, we’ll get food poisoning?” he whispered. He reasonably suspected Gu Xi was scheming something. Although the woman appeared calm, her silence made him uneasy.
Gu Xi, stirred by Su Chen’s nudge, slowly regained focus. “Don’t say anything yet. Think about how we can break this situation. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get tied up by these little mice soon,” Gu Xi warned. Su Chen then looked around and confirmed the trap Gu Xi mentioned. From the moment they entered the wheat field, toured the fruit drying area, and finally the sewage purification spot, it felt like something was missing. The strange thought quickly crept into Su Chen’s mind. “Something’s missing—meat. Yes, poultry.” There was no poultry in this place at all. If, as they were told, everything was sent to the floating island, then where was the poultry meat coming from? The thought was terrifying.
The mouse people were polite and always referred to themselves as gods. Then why, from the first glance, could they clearly recognize their identities? Humans were not unfamiliar to them—after all, the chief before them was human. What was more thought-provoking was that his illusion showed no abnormalities, meaning there was no physical danger in the surroundings.
Seeing the old woman holding a tray growing impatient, Gu Xi decided to break the stalemate. “I guess if we eat this, we might turn into chiefs like you, huh?” Gu Xi teased.

The prisoner in the cage said, “Don’t worry, this is all leftover food from your floating island. Although it’s leftover to you, it’s a treasure to us. Usually, I wouldn’t serve it to guests.” As she spoke, she eyed the food on Gu Xi and Su Chen’s plates and swallowed.
“I see you’re quite tempted. Why don’t you eat first?” Su Chen noticed how strange the woman’s behavior was. “I can’t eat, I really can’t. If I eat, then, uh, ah,” she said, though her words were hospitable, her body language warned Gu Xi and Su Chen not to eat a bite.
Now it was clear. This chief was a puppet. Thinking this, Gu Xi secretly drew her Winchester from the system and fired two shots at the mouse people who had led them in. She thought they would fall dead immediately. To her surprise, no blood flowed, and their bodies transformed into little mice that scattered in all directions. Gross.
The system made no sound at this moment, indicating the collection was incomplete, meaning the mouse people were not dead. The fleeing mice were overwhelming. The old woman serving food didn’t run away but instead extended her claws, ready to attack Su Chen and Gu Xi. They quickly dodged. The claws were blacker than coal.
Gu Xi fired two more shots at the fleeing mice on the ground. She wasn’t going to give up; there was no hope of extracting any shortcut from these strange people. The bullets ran out quickly, but thankfully there were some left. Gu Xi swiftly reloaded and prepared to unleash a second barrage on the escaping mice.
Suddenly, the woman in the cage went mad. Her eyes turned blood red, veins bulged on her neck, and she became zombie-like. Then she let out a roar. Her mouth stretched wider and wider, as if being pried open by something. From her mouth, a head suddenly emerged.
Su Chen, seeing the head, almost wet himself. It was the sweatshirt he had taken off when they first arrived. Not only did the sweatshirt appear again, but Gu Xi was also disgusted. She had just shot the mouse people, and yet they weren’t dead—they were reviving? No, that wasn’t right.

Judging by the prisoner’s agonized expression, she must have been parasitized. The mouse head burst from her mouth, tearing off nearly half her face. The scene was gruesome. The woman’s intestines and internal organs hung from the grotesque mouse-headed creature’s body, covered in slime.
Ugh! Su Chen immediately vomited beside them, unable to hold back. Gu Xi felt a wave of dizziness hit her. Stay calm, stay calm. She still had bullets. The trigger she had just cocked was ready.
Aiming, the mouse person saw Gu Xi’s target and flew into a rage! It jumped up, tearing at the cage with tremendous strength. In no time, it ripped a hole in the cage, seemingly about to escape.
“Run! What are you doing?” Su Chen shouted, dragging Gu Xi away from the mouse person. He wasn’t sure if she was frozen in fear or truly calm—she didn’t move an inch.
At that moment, the crisp footsteps behind them suddenly came to mind. A group of crisp footsteps. He turned around. Yellow hats! The mouse people in the pool who hadn’t been introduced!
At that instant, his second ring lit up with a warning. Danger had truly arrived! Gu Xi also noticed the attackers behind them. The mouse person in front grew ever closer. She fired two shots, making the creature howl in pain. The mouse person braced itself to launch a fierce attack!
Realizing the mouse demon was about to strike, Gu Xi half-opened her eyes and fired relentlessly at its head, emptying the magazine in rapid succession. The surrounding noise abruptly ceased with the clatter of spent shells.
