Volume 1 Chapter 5: The Third Visit to the Police Station
Page 1/3
Watching herself drift farther and farther from home, Mu Yao found herself visiting the police station three times in just half a month. Probably even more frequently than Liu Bei’s legendary three visits to the thatched cottage.
Before she could even finish marveling at this, Gu Nanxiao entered the room where she was, holding a thick stack of papers.
???
“Regarding civic ideological security education, adult version...”
!!!
Mu Yao wanted to slam the table in frustration, but a cold glance from Gu Nanxiao immediately silenced her.
Clearing his throat, Gu Nanxiao began reading aloud from the first major heading in a voice utterly devoid of inflection—more robotic than AI itself.
When he finished the last regulation, before he could say she was free to leave, Mu Yao was already half-standing, ready to bolt.
Gu Nanxiao set down the ideological report, arms crossed, watching her at ease. He simply refused to let her go.
Mu Yao’s straight posture gradually bent.
“Is the police station your second home? You sure like to visit often.”
Mu Yao sneered secretly; it wasn’t by choice.
Facing Gu Nanxiao’s expressionless demeanor, she realized that on another’s turf, one must know when to yield.
“Officer...”
Gu Nanxiao blinked.
“What is it? Planning to leave early again today?”
Mu Yao: ...
“Don’t even think about it. Sit here with me; the ideological education has a time limit.”
Saying that, he glanced faintly at the girl whose red lips parted slightly, then smiled with satisfaction and closed his eyes to rest.
Mu Yao slowly leaned over the table, blowing on her bangs and playing idly.
The interrogation room fell into silence.
The clang of the iron door opening caught Mu Yao’s attention.
“Boss, time’s up…”
The next second, a gust of wind swept past the young officer’s desk.
Gu Nanxiao opened his eyes, now fully composed, only to find the girl’s figure had vanished.
Stiffly moving his body, he pushed open the door and left.
Mu Yao dashed into the lobby, grabbed the drowsy Wang Rui sitting on the bench, and prepared to run as if fleeing a ferocious beast behind them.
What a joke!
If she didn’t run now, would she wait until the long-legged one decided to cause trouble again?!
“Mu Yao.”
The man’s calm voice echoed through the police station lobby.
The friction of Mu Yao’s shoe soles against the ground sounded sharply.
Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes briefly, she turned stiffly—whatever comes, comes.
“Your charger.”

Mu Yao’s gaze flickered between the familiar white cord and Gu Nanxiao’s face.
Step by step, she edged forward, snatching the charger from his hand.
At lightning speed, she returned to Wang Rui’s side.
Standing quietly and obediently, she watched Gu Nanxiao.
“Let’s go. Don’t come here again.”
Gu Nanxiao waved at them before turning back to his office.
Mu Yao stuck out her tongue at his retreating figure.
Turning around, she met Wang Rui’s sparkling eyes, brimming with silent scheming.
‘There’s drama here!’
...
Having behaved herself, Mu Yao was utterly subdued after leaving the police station this time.
Whether the ideological education actually worked, she wasn’t sure.
In any case, she had entered a phase where she avoided going out unless absolutely necessary.
She slept soundly until six in the evening.
Normally, she was alone in the house, but today, miraculously, the lights were on.
At this moment, she was still in her bedroom.
So...
There was only one possibility!
“Dear Mom and Dad! You’re finally back!”
Barefoot and barely putting on shoes, Mu Yao rushed to the living room.
In stark contrast to her happiness and excitement, her parents wore faint worry on their faces.
“Yao Yao’s awake? Let Mom see if you’ve grown taller in the last six months.”
The moment Ye An heard movement upstairs, she struggled to control her emotions but couldn’t help some signs showing.
Mu Yao sat obediently between her parents.
“You’re not a kid anymore, yet still so unruly.”
Though scolding, Mu Wei Ran’s eyes betrayed nothing but indulgence.
Since childhood, their daughter had been the treasure of both him and Ye An, the apple of their eye.
And now...
Glancing past Mu Yao at Ye An, the wife shook her head.
“Did something happen? You both look worried.”
Mu Yao reached out to smooth Ye An’s tightly furrowed brow.
“Nothing, just company matters. Yao Yao, are you hungry? Let’s go eat.”
Before Mu Yao could respond, her parents, just like when she was a child, took her by each side and led her to the dining room.
Until dinner was over and they went upstairs, she found no opportunity to ask.
Ye An watched the door slowly close, her daughter’s figure disappearing from sight.
Her body trembled as she leaned into her husband’s embrace, choking back sobs.
...
In the blink of an eye, it was the end of the year.

In the early morning, Mu Yao, still groggy and confused, was dragged from her bed by Ye An.
Only three hours had passed since she had put down her phone to sleep.
Seeing the faint dark circles under her daughter’s eyes, Ye An’s heart ached, but...
“Yao Yao, today you’re going out with Mom and Dad to see some friends. Dress nicely.”
After Ye An left the bedroom, Mu Yao stared at the morning sunlight outside the window for a while before reluctantly getting moving.
Relying on her good skin tone, she simply covered the dark circles with concealer and applied light makeup—that would suffice.
After all, she wasn’t the main character today.
Quickly going downstairs and heading out, Mu Yao didn’t notice the flicker of emotion in Ye An’s eyes.
Their private car finally stopped in front of a military district compound.
Mu Yao instinctively felt uneasy about this place.
Collecting herself, she got out of the car, politely greeted the others, then quietly became invisible.
Bored, she propped her head up and gazed out at the plants and flowers outside the window—and at a black Hummer approaching from afar.
Her eyes were drawn to the vehicle.
Instead of rushing past where she sat, the car turned and entered the compound.
Someone she knew?
The clear sound of a door closing came from the entrance.
A magnetic male voice followed.
“Mom, Dad, what’s the rush calling me back for? It’s the end of the year, I’m quite busy.”
Along with the voice came...
Mu Yao’s eyes widened involuntarily.
The long legs!
When Gu Nanxiao saw Mu Yao, he paused briefly, then continued as if nothing had happened.
“Only you cause trouble?”
Li Mengfei shot back at Gu Nanxiao, then kindly introduced to the Mu family, “Sorry for the trouble. This is my ungrateful son, Gu Nanxiao.”
Though the words were addressed to the Mu family, Mu Yao always felt Li Mengfei’s gaze subtly lingered on her.
Was it just her imagination?
“Not at all. Your son looks quite handsome.”
Mu Yao was speechless.
Mutual flattery between families, though late, was finally underway.
But the plot today seemed different from usual?!
Mu Yao looked questioningly at her smiling parents and reluctantly took out her phone to scan a QR code.
So, what exactly was going on?!
They hadn’t told her there’d be a show waiting for her to perform today!
For the first time in her life, Mu Yao felt betrayed by her own parents.
Under the watchful eyes of both sets of parents, Mu Yao and Gu Nanxiao were forced to begin their performance.
