Chapter 27: The God of War in the Office

Lin Ye’s nose stung faintly.
When they were children, his little sister had been inseparable from him. They had always shared an exceptionally close bond—until that incident a few years ago… Afterward, their relationship seemed to have fallen to freezing point.
Perhaps that was why Lin Ye had deliberately chosen to return home at a time other than the holidays. Maybe some part of him had wanted to avoid his sister. After all… she probably did not want to see a brother like him either.
When silence briefly fell over the phone, Lin’s father sighed, and the wrinkles on his face seemed to deepen.
“If it isn’t convenient for you…”
His father’s words pulled Lin Ye out of his memories.
“No, Dad. My phone just lost signal for a moment. There’s no problem on my end. Just have her come here. Once she’s on her way, send me the train number and arrival time. I’ll go pick her up.”
A flicker of delight appeared in his father’s eyes, as though Lin Ye’s agreement was something worth celebrating.
What parent wouldn’t want to see their son and daughter getting along?
“Dad, you don’t need to worry about her. Just take care of yourself and look after Mom.”
“Mm. You… take care of yourself out there too.”
And with that, the call with his father came to a simple end.
Before going to bed that night, Lin Ye set an alarm for 9:55 the next morning to remind himself not to forget to call Mr. Su at ten.
Early the next morning, Lin Ye went downstairs for steamed buns as usual—and unexpectedly saw Zhang Wen there doing the same.
“Wait, what are you doing here?”
Lin Ye was dumbfounded. He distinctly remembered that Zhang Wen’s home was in the completely opposite direction.
Zhang Wen, however, looked delighted. He quickly finished the bun in his mouth, ordered the owner to bring out another basket of buns and a bowl of soup, then patted the stool beside him, signaling Lin Ye to sit down and eat breakfast first.

Lin Ye did not stand on ceremony. He sat down at once and dug in.
Zhang Wen followed his usual rule: he did not talk much while eating. Only after swallowing his last bite of bun and drinking the last mouthful of soup did he reach up and pull out a tissue.
Then he turned to Lin Ye, raised his eyebrows, and said, “Brother, I’m going to take off in a few days too.”
Lin Ye continued eating and gave him a look that meant: Go on, keep performing.
“My old man saw me go home yesterday and thought I was there to ask him for money to chase girls. He even had a Seven Wolves belt ready for me. But right then and there, brother, I showed him what it means to be viewed in a new light after three days apart.”
“When my old man heard that I genuinely wanted to accomplish something worthwhile, he was so happy that he ate an extra bowl of rice at lunch yesterday. He agreed on the spot to find a project and sign a contract with our company.”
The corner of Lin Ye’s mouth twitched slightly. It was obvious that Zhang Wen was genuinely thrilled—so much so that Lin Ye could not bring himself to ask how, exactly, a man in real estate was supposed to arrange a project with their lingerie company.
Surely Zhang Wen’s father was not planning to purchase their underwear in bulk and have all his employees wear company-issued underwear…
“Uh… That really is good news.” Lin Ye managed to squeeze out a smile that was not entirely unpleasant.
After the two of them had eaten their fill, Lin Ye also saved the two yuan he would have spent on a shared electric bike to the office by hitching a ride with Zhang Wen. The only problem was that sitting in the Audi S4 was genuinely a little cramped.
“Tch. I was in a hurry this morning, so I just grabbed a random key from the drawer. If I’d known it was this little thing, I would’ve been better off riding here.”
Zhang Wen slammed the car door shut, clearly none too pleased with the vehicle himself. And who could blame him? No one enjoyed driving with the roof practically pressed against their head.
The two parted ways in the elevator. Before leaving, Zhang Wen declared with absolute confidence that once his major project came through, he would definitely climb the ladder as well. Ideally, he would even have an office of his own beside Lin Ye’s.
On his way to the office, Lin Ye was surprised to find colleagues taking the initiative to greet him. He was not quite used to it.
All right. A new day, a new beginning. What would Lin Ye’s first important task of the morning be?
Cleaning the general manager’s office!
That was what he had found online. When he opened his email, he discovered that his inbox was empty and there were no messages for the time being. Sitting on the soft, oversized sofa gave him the distinct feeling that he ought to be doing something—otherwise, accepting such a generous salary would start to feel like holding a hot coal.

Out of respect for the work of a secretary, Lin Ye had searched Qiandu for information about a secretary’s daily duties, naturally excluding those bizarre “secretary and boss” workplace demonstration videos.
Even so, he had learned quite a bit of genuine practical knowledge. One of the first duties on the list was cleaning the manager’s office.
Lin Ye’s fingerprints had already been registered with the general manager’s office door the day before. So today, all he had to do was raise his hand and press lightly. The mysterious office swung open before him.
The general manager’s office was exceptionally spacious and brightly lit. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows and spilled across the exquisite carpet, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
A large solid-wood desk occupied the center of the room. A computer and several stacks of documents rested on it, all arranged in neat order. Behind the desk stood a high-backed leather executive chair.
Along one side of the room was another solid-wood bookcase filled with all kinds of books. Lin Ye did not inspect them closely. His attention was drawn instead to an exquisitely crafted tea set beside the bookcase.
Only after stepping closer did he notice that everything was coated in a thin layer of dust. Judging by its thickness, no one had come in to clean the room for quite some time.
Well, since he was already here, he might as well roll up his sleeves and get to work. The more he did, the more secure his salary would feel in his hands. He had earned every penny of it with his own hands!
Lin Ye went out once more to the cleaners’ storage room and brought back fresh gloves and towels. He removed his jacket, put on an apron and protective sleeves, then carried a mop and vacuum cleaner in his left hand and a bucket of water in his right.
Lin Ye’s physical condition really was as excellent as he claimed. By the time he reached the office, he had not spilled a single drop of water.
He pulled out his phone and checked the time. It was 9:03. His inbox was still empty, and there were no problems to worry about.
Time to get to work!
He would try to finish cleaning the office before his phone alarm rang. Lin Ye threw himself into the task with blazing enthusiasm.
He had no idea that the colleagues outside the office were already whispering among themselves, their jaws practically hanging open.
“How many days do you think this newly promoted Secretary Lin will last?”
“Do you really have to ask? He stepped on a land mine the moment he arrived. Ever since the previous general manager’s secretary left, have you seen anyone else dare enter that office? This kid is definitely finished.”
“Still, Secretary Lin means well. No one’s cleaned that place in ages—it must be filthy inside. Forget it, forget it. As far as I’m concerned, I didn’t see anything. And don’t drag me into this.”
