Chapter Four: Using Beauty to Network and Receive Gifts from Boys Online
If this were her past life, the gentle and honest Xiang Yu would never have been a match; the blame for being fickle and heartless would have been hers for sure!
But this is not the past life.
Xiang Yu sneered coldly and said in a calm voice, “Is it me who likes Chen Ze, or you? Judging by how anxious and hurt you look, it must be you who likes Chen Ze, right?”
Many of the onlooking classmates nodded. Indeed, it seemed that Ye Nuoxin was the one who liked Chen Ze. As soon as Chen Ze was mentioned by Xiang Yu, Ye Nuoxin immediately turned hostile.
Ye Nuoxin blushed fiercely. “You’re talking nonsense. There are still love letters from others in your desk. Clearly, you’re the one who changed your feelings.”
“Oh? Love letters? Let’s see them,” some bold boys started to jeer.
Even students from other classes gathered to watch the spectacle. Matters of secret and open crushes were the most captivating in the school.
Xiang Yu had long since torn up those two letters, and the glowing doll was thrown beyond the wall on the way to the cafeteria. There was no joke to be shared here.
Instead, she was curious as to how Ye Nuoxin knew she had received love letters, since she had never shared this with her.
She remained silent. Since Ye Nuoxin wanted to make a big scene to embarrass her, she would escalate it even further and see who would end up worse off.
Chen Ze knew the truth; Ye Nuoxin had told him last night. Before morning self-study, he also saw Xiang Yu tear up the two letters and throw them into the trash. But after being so ruthlessly mocked by Xiang Yu in public, he intended to teach her a lesson.
So, he not only did not stop Ye Nuoxin but hoped she would make a bigger fuss to embarrass Xiang Yu, so that he could then comfort her in the role of protector.
He gave Ye Nuoxin an encouraging glance.
---
Sure enough, Ye Nuoxin, caught up in the moment, revealed more about Xiang Yu receiving love letters.
“Xiang Yu almost receives love letters every day, sometimes as many as seven or eight. She keeps them all hidden and looks at them whenever she can. She especially likes being secretly admired.
“There are even some persistent ones who keep writing to her. Everyone thinks, if she wasn’t giving any signals, would people keep writing to her?
“She neither rejects nor commits. She waits to see which suitor has the best conditions, then dates whoever suits her best.”
The crowd’s gaze toward Xiang Yu grew increasingly disdainful. No one expected the seemingly innocent and reserved campus queen to be so frivolous and calculating beneath the surface.
A senior from another class stepped forward. “Well done, Xiang Yu. You even dared to mess with me. No wonder every time my letters and gifts are collected together, you always say you’ll wait until I’m eighteen. Turns out you were just fishing for me. Just you wait!”
The crowd erupted again, looking at Xiang Yu with a mix of scorn and sympathy.
Having provoked a campus bully, Xiang Yu had clearly made a grave mistake this time.
A few other boys also looked sullen, glaring at Xiang Yu—clearly, they too were victims.
Ye Nuoxin looked at Xiang Yu smugly. If she dared to disgrace both her and Chen Ze, she would wait to see her reputation ruined.
Ideally, Xiang Yu would be expelled from school, unable to even get her middle school diploma.
Then Ye Nuoxin would make sure to spread the word throughout the village, so Xiang Yu wouldn’t even be able to lift her head there.
Without even a middle school education, she’d have to work odd jobs, and her parents would beat her mercilessly.
Xiang Yu’s highest moment of fame was being watched by 300,000 viewers live-streaming her dancing provocatively—such a scene was nothing compared to what was coming.
---
Xiang Yu stared at Ye Nuoxin without changing expression, observing the few boys with darkened faces, her gaze growing ever deeper and more intense.
In her youth, she had only ever been attracted to Chen Ze, but she never crossed any boundaries in behavior or words. She certainly never had ambiguous relations with other boys nor kept any of their gifts. This matter must be connected to Ye Nuoxin.
Sure enough, as Xiang Yu and Ye Nuoxin wished, some high-achieving students, disturbed by the overcrowded class, complained to the teacher.
The homeroom teacher stormed in. “Xiang Yu, come to the office! Everyone else, return to your classes!”
He truly hadn’t expected Xiang Yu to be so cunning, even using her charm to have boys send her gifts via the internet. She usually seemed so well-behaved.
Xiang Yu didn’t move. Her voice was clear, “Teacher, Ye Nuoxin and that boy should come too. They slandered me; we need to confront each other.”
She pointed at the campus bully from the other class.
The boy’s face darkened. Writing love letters to girls wasn’t a big deal, but he would still be reprimanded.
Xiang Yu’s situation was far worse, yet she was willing to fight to the death!
She didn’t even consider whether she had the ability to handle the situation or understand its complexity. Indeed, a pretty face is just a pretty face—no brains behind it.
