Chapter 34: Ye Nuanxin Has Disappeared
Zhang Xiaoyan was indignant and kept signaling to Xiang Yu, even wanting to stand up and speak out on her behalf.
Xiang Yu calmly shook her head at her. She did not want Zhang Xiaoyan to get involved, nor did she want her to catch Ye Nuanxin's eye and become a target for retaliation. She was determined to protect those who cared for her. Having never experienced the hardships of Xiang Yu's past life, Zhang Xiaoyan could not truly understand how wicked Ye Nuanxin could be.
Xiang Yu did not offer any explanation. She simply returned the curious gazes of those around her with a calm, indifferent smile, then lowered her head and began working on her test paper, acting as if everything around her had nothing to do with her. The innocent need no defense, and she had no time to engage with a rabid dog. Mr. Zhang must have already done something; otherwise, Ye Nuanxin would not have returned in such a shattered state.
Indeed, Mr. Zhang had told Ye Nuanxin to go home and not return to school until she had written a formal letter of apology. She was also required to cooperate fully with the public security investigation, as Xiang Yu was insistent on pressing charges, and she would have to face the consequences. This was the directive the local police station had asked him to relay, and it was the decision he had reached after consulting with the principal. However, he had not told Ye Nuanxin to leave immediately; he had instructed her to wait for her parents to pick her up the following morning.
After sending Ye Nuanxin back to the classroom, Mr. Zhang called Ye Kun. Ye Kun was shocked to learn that Ye Nuanxin had caused such a massive scene that Xiang Yu had taken her to the police station. He cursed her under his breath, thinking how foolish she was to cause trouble again just when things had quieted down, only to get caught red-handed. Not wanting to be implicated further, Ye Kun quickly distanced himself. "Mr. Zhang, I will go find her right now, give her a good lecture, and have her parents come to pick her up first thing tomorrow morning."
When Mr. Zhang and Ye Kun arrived at the classroom, Ye Nuanxin’s seat was already empty. Upon asking the other students, they learned that she had returned, packed her things, cursed at Xiang Yu, and bolted toward the school gate. With the evening study session nearing its end, the gates were wide open for day students to leave, and without anyone monitoring the exit, she had certainly escaped.
Mr. Zhang’s face turned ashen. He looked at Ye Kun with deep displeasure, too angry to speak. "Your Ye family... Ye Nuanxin's parents certainly have a unique way of raising their child."
Ye Kun dared not retort. Mr. Zhang had ten years of teaching experience, held the rank of senior teacher, and served as the assistant dean of students; he did not want to offend him. He felt a deep sense of regret for having stepped in to help Ye Nuanxin the previous week, only to be dragged down by her viciousness and stupidity. "I will go look for her right now," Ye Kun said, desperate to make amends.
Mr. Zhang took a deep breath and followed him out. Student safety was his absolute priority. If anything were to happen to Ye Nuanxin after she had run off like this, let alone holding her accountable, he and the school would be held primarily responsible, and his teaching career could effectively be over.
Ye Kun and Mr. Zhang searched the vicinity of the school, but they could not find her. They checked every internet cafe and arcade on the street to no avail. Ye Kun even rode his motorcycle to the Ye family’s home in Cottonwood Village, but she was nowhere to be found.
Upon hearing that their daughter was missing, Ye Nuanxin’s parents were terrified. Ye Fen began to wail and throw a tantrum, insisting on going to the school to demand an explanation. Ye Kun laid out the entire situation for them. Upon hearing the news, Ye Fen’s eyes filled with malice. "It’s that little vixen from the Xiang family again! I’m going to settle this with Li Meilan right now. That girl is a brat with no upbringing!"
Ye Kun tried to stop them, suggesting that finding the girl was more important than causing a scene. But Ye Fen would not listen. "Her daughter has turned my household upside down, so I’m going to make sure hers has no peace either."
Hearing this, Ye Kun stopped trying to intervene. Privately, he felt the Xiang family deserved a lesson anyway. Inside their home, Xiang Fuqiang and his wife were watching television and cracking melon seeds when they heard Ye Fen pounding on their door, shouting. Their hearts skipped a beat. They knew Ye Fen and her husband, the lame man, would come for them, but they had not expected them to show up so quickly, and in such a frenzy in the middle of the night.
