She gestured for Qin Jiu to step outside and talk.

Once they had left the hospital room, Jiang Nanxing folded her arms and arched a brow slightly. “Mr. Qin, have you made some progress?”

Qin Jiu gave a slight nod, and the assistant beside him immediately handed Jiang Nanxing a document envelope.

A little surprised, Jiang Nanxing accepted it suspiciously and opened it.

Inside was indeed evidence that her mother had been given counterfeit medication.

The corners of Qin Jiu’s lips curved faintly as he said meaningfully, “Last night’s events dealt Sheng Ting a heavy blow.”

“So now he’s devoted to proving that he’s capable after all.”

“He doesn’t even know that your mother is no longer at his hospital. Nor does he know that her former attending physician betrayed him and left the country without a second thought.”

Jiang Nanxing was speechless, though she had to admit it was exactly the sort of thing that idiot Sheng Ting would do.

The only thing she found puzzling was this: “Was my mother’s attending physician really that easy to persuade?”

In a calm, unruffled tone, Qin Jiu replied, “Perhaps my heartfelt persuasion last night awakened what little conscience he had left.”

The corner of Jiang Nanxing’s mouth twitched. “Do you think I’m going to believe that?”

Qin Jiu shrugged slightly, his smile carrying a hint of arrogance and shamelessness. “There’s nothing I can do if Miss Jiang doesn’t believe me.”

Then he added, “If I hadn’t moved a little faster this time, Miss Jiang might have begun to doubt my abilities.”

Jiang Nanxing gave a derisive laugh. “That’s true.”

A flicker passed through Qin Jiu’s eyes as he asked, “Does Miss Jiang have any other plans for what comes next?”

Jiang Nanxing tapped the document envelope with her fingertips. “I’ll probably have to return to the company and look for something that can help us win the lawsuit.”

“But it’ll have to wait a couple of days.”

Her mother had only just finished surgery.

They had said everything they needed to say, and the atmosphere soon turned cold.

After all, they had only known each other for a few days and were not particularly familiar.

The longer the silence stretched, the more an indescribable awkwardness settled over the air.

Qin Jiu’s assistant was growing anxious.

Based on his understanding of their president, if Qin Jiu had no ulterior motive, he would never waste even a second more than necessary.

Now that they had finished discussing business and Qin Jiu still had not left, it clearly meant he had some other interest in Miss Jiang.

But why wasn’t he saying anything?

Unable to bear it any longer, the assistant spoke up. “Mr. Qin, it’s already past noon.”

Then, with deliberate politeness, he asked Jiang Nanxing, “Miss Jiang, you haven’t had lunch yet, have you?”

He thought he had made the hint obvious enough. Surely their president understood by now.

Jiang Nanxing shook her head. “Not yet.”

Qin Jiu glanced at the time. “Then let’s have lunch together.”

The assistant breathed a sigh of relief. At last, his president had caught on.

How could Jiang Nanxing have failed to notice the assistant’s intentions?

She tilted her head and gave Qin Jiu a faint smile before agreeing. “Then I’ll trouble you, Mr. Qin.”

Qin Jiu’s Adam’s apple bobbed once, and he murmured his assent.

Qin Jiu chose the restaurant.

It was an exclusive private kitchen.

The prices were frighteningly high.

Ordinary people could hardly afford to eat there.

Jiang Nanxing felt no need to be restrained. Qin Jiu was paying, after all.

After ordering, she went to the restroom.

It had to be said that wherever the heroine went, trouble followed.

She had only gone to use the restroom, yet someone still managed to corner her.

Jiang Nanxing had no idea which wealthy heiress the woman was, but she was unbearably arrogant, her tone full of disdain. “Jiang Nanxing? You can actually afford to come to a place like this? Don’t tell me you’re here to work as a server and wait on people.”

The woman beside her chimed in sarcastically, “Oh, you’ve forgotten? Jiang Nanxing is quite something. She used to cling to Mr. Sheng, and now she’s latched on to Mr. Qin. Of course she can afford to eat here. She’s very capable.”

The two of them traded remarks, one after another.

“She’s pretty. Once she spreads her legs, there’s nothing she can’t get.”

Jiang Nanxing raised a brow. So she had come to the restroom to relieve herself, while these two had come here to eat.

How else could their mouths smell so foul?

Naturally, she had no intention of indulging them.

Just as the two women grew more animated, Jiang Nanxing slapped each of them across the face.

The two were stunned for a moment before shrieking and cursing, lunging at her in an attempt to tear her apart.

Jiang Nanxing nimbly dodged their grasping hands. She seized one woman by the hair, shoved her into a stall, and forced her head into the toilet.

The other woman was scared witless.

She had spent years brawling with other women, but she had never seen anything so terrifying.

She instinctively turned and tried to run.

But best friends had to suffer together.

Jiang Nanxing shoved her head into the toilet as well.

The two women lifted their heads from the bowls, disheveled and miserable, sobbing as though they were being slaughtered.

Jiang Nanxing glanced at the gleaming toilets and felt that the two women had gotten off far too easily.

Taking her time, she asked, “Go on, then. Why have you stopped?”

The two women trembled and begged for mercy.

“We won’t say anything else! We promise we never will!”

They even sold out their accomplice.

“It was Yao Xinyue who told us to say those things!”

“That’s right! It was Yao Xinyue!”

“We were deceived by Yao Xinyue!”

In short, they were doing everything they could to shift the blame.

“Tsk.” Jiang Nanxing was beginning to lose patience.

It was obvious that neither woman realized what she had done wrong.

“You listen to Yao Xinyue so obediently. If she told you to eat excrement, would you do that too?”

“Aren’t you simply jealous and envious of me?”

“You don’t even have the courage to admit it. Looks like you still need to be taught a lesson!”

With that, she rolled up her sleeves, intending to continue teaching them how to behave.

The two women burst into hysterical sobs.

“We can help you call Yao Xinyue over!”

“That’s right, that’s right! Yao Xinyue is here too!”

Jiang Nanxing’s expression became impossible to describe.

The bond between these supposed best friends and Yao Xinyue was truly a perfect example of fake friendship.

She did not care whether Yao Xinyue was there. She only wanted to know whether Sheng Ting was present.

If he was, she might be able to rack up another wave of heartbreak points.

She asked the two women, “Where’s Sheng Ting?”

They nodded frantically. “He’s here, he’s here!”

They even gave her the number of the private room.

Qin Jiu, her idealized old-flame stand-in, was here as well. It would be a waste not to take the opportunity to earn some heartbreak points.

She crooked a finger at the two women. “I won’t punish you, but you have to help me with one more thing.”

How could they dare refuse? They agreed at once.

Jiang Nanxing told them to find a way to lure Sheng Ting outside their private-room door in ten minutes.

The two women agreed.

After giving them their instructions, Jiang Nanxing left.

The women breathed a sigh of relief.

One of them asked, “Are we really going to do what she said?”

“What else can we do?” the other snapped. “Jiang Nanxing is a crazy woman! Who knows what she’ll do if we refuse to obey her?”

They tidied themselves up, doing their best to look as though nothing had happened.

Then they went to Sheng Ting and Yao Xinyue’s private room and casually mentioned that they had seen Jiang Nanxing with Qin Jiu.

The moment those two names were spoken, Sheng Ting sprang to his feet, his expression terrifyingly dark.

“Where are they?”

The two women jumped and quietly gave him the room number.

Sheng Ting let out a cold laugh. “I’d like to see what tricks that shameless Jiang Nanxing is playing this time!”

With that, he strode out of the private room.

Yao Xinyue hurried after him.

As she jogged to keep up, she said, “Brother Sheng, you mustn’t get angry. If you lose your temper, won’t that be exactly what Sister wants?”

“She’ll think that acting this way is enough to attract your attention.”
