“Oh.”

Jiang Nanxing’s tone could not have been flatter.

The System was frantic.

After these past few days, it had come to understand very clearly that its host was not an easy person to deal with.

It was genuinely afraid that its host would simply quit and refuse to complete the missions, so it desperately tried to prove that it was still useful. “That’s not all! I can block your pain receptors and things like that.”

“I can also provide you with all kinds of information!”

“If we enter a modern world, I can even make money to support you!”

“And there’s more…”

The System was so anxious that it began cursing itself. Stupid brain, think faster!

Jiang Nanxing nearly lost control of her expression.

She had never expected that this System was also an overworked wage slave, the sort that even had to pay out of pocket when necessary.

But she said nothing.

The System suddenly cried out, “Right! Didn’t you want evidence that Shengting Hospital had secretly switched the medication meant to treat your mother? I can provide surveillance footage!”

“And there’s more! When you want to make everything Sheng Ting does known to the entire internet, I can help you. You won’t even need to hire paid online supporters!”

Jiang Nanxing still did not respond. The System was now completely at a loss, unable to think of anything else it could offer.

“I…I…”

In the end, it burst into loud sobs. “Please, Host! Don’t stop doing the missions!” It sounded utterly pitiful.

Jiang Nanxing felt that she had pushed it far enough and finally spoke. “Then can you make sure Mother Jiang’s illness is cured?”

The System instinctively wanted to say that Mother Jiang’s illness was necessary for the plot, but it quickly stopped itself.

That was frightening.

After hesitating, it said, “Mother Jiang’s illness isn’t terminal. It can be cured in the first place.”

Jiang Nanxing said, “Oh.”

The System shuddered. “Yes! Yes, I can! I can make Mother Jiang recover a little faster.”

But that would affect the completion of the mission milestones!

It cautiously asked Jiang Nanxing, “Then you’ll complete every mission milestone, right, Host?”

“Of course,” Jiang Nanxing replied.

The System finally relaxed and said, “In the cultivation world, there’s a pill that can cure all illnesses. We can use it for Mother Jiang.”

“But each time, you can only dissolve an infinitesimal amount in water for her to drink. You mustn’t let the doctors in this world notice anything strange about her recovery.”

Jiang Nanxing remembered the System mentioning its system store. “The items from the store before?”

The System mumbled smugly, “Those are from my private collection.”

Jiang Nanxing was delighted. It seemed this little System still had quite a substantial reserve. She would have to find a way to fleece it again in the future.

She showed none of this on her face.

Assistant Qin Jiu brought a doctor over, and they carried out a thorough examination and questioning.

They also drew blood for testing.

The results came back quickly. The concentration of medication in her blood was already very low.

At that level, it would no longer cause Jiang Nanxing any harm or danger.

It seemed the System was still very cautious.

After all that commotion, Jiang Nanxing’s mother’s surgery was over as well.

The doctor said the operation had been a great success.

As long as she cooperated properly with the subsequent treatment and recuperated well, her illness could be completely cured.

However, the treatment would likely require a considerable amount of money and a lengthy period of time.

The reason this episode had been so dangerous was that her condition had gone untreated for too long.

Jiang Nanxing questioned the doctor in detail about her mother’s condition.

Qin Jiu watched her in profile.

Calm—nothing but calm.

Even when the doctor said that her mother’s condition had worsened because it had been left untreated for too long, she showed not the slightest trace of anger.

Of course, Qin Jiu did not believe Jiang Nanxing was not angry.

If she were not angry, she would never have wanted to crush Sheng Ting outright.

He simply felt that Jiang Nanxing was a woman with extraordinary inner strength.

He gloated inwardly. Sheng Ting deserved what was coming to him.

He had mistaken a falcon for a canary. Of course he would end up getting pecked in the eye.

After learning everything she needed to know, Jiang Nanxing did not leave the hospital.

She thanked Qin Jiu.

Qin Jiu took out his phone. “Let’s add each other as friends.”

They had always contacted each other by phone number before, and, to be honest, that still felt somewhat distant.

Since they were now collaborators, it was unreasonable for them not even to have each other added as friends.

After adding each other, Qin Jiu left.

Jiang Nanxing asked the System, “Little Two, what’s the next mission milestone?”

The System answered promptly, “Let me look.”

“The next milestone is: attend an auction, be falsely accused of theft, and have your clothes stripped off to prove your innocence.”

It added cheerfully, “This one doesn’t have a subject either!”

Jiang Nanxing flipped through the novel to the corresponding passage.

This mission milestone would not occur for several days.

As always, the plot was enough to send her blood pressure soaring.

In the story, Jiang Nanxing attended an auction with Sheng Ting as his secretary.

Yao Xinyue falsely accused her of stealing something, incited a group of wealthy people to humiliate her, and even ordered someone to strip off her clothes.

All in the name of helping her prove her innocence.

Not only did Sheng Ting fail to come to her rescue, he mocked her sarcastically before leaving her alone at the auction venue in a disheveled state.

An auction, huh? She would have to make good use of it.

It was only a little past two in the morning, and Jiang Nanxing was not sleepy. So she continued probing the System.

She asked, “You said you could make money to support me. How exactly would you support me?”

The System said it could take orders online, create a few small programs no more advanced than the technology of this world, or earn money by acting as a paid online supporter.

Tsk. Jiang Nanxing could not help feeling a little sorry for it.

She asked again, “Won’t you get in trouble for doing those things?”

The System answered honestly, “No. As long as I don’t disrupt the world or cause chaos in the mission world, the people above won’t investigate too closely.”

Jiang Nanxing nodded in understanding.

Things were fairly flexible in the mission world, and there was plenty of room for maneuver.

Exactly how much room there was remained to be determined slowly. There was no need to rush.

The System once again sought reassurance pitifully. “You’ll definitely complete the missions, right, Host?”

It had practically exposed every last secret it possessed to her.

Jiang Nanxing comforted it. “We’re both grasshoppers tied to the same rope now. Would I really deceive you?”

The System thought that made sense and relaxed.

It even began showering her with flattery. “You’re the very best host!”

The praise made Jiang Nanxing feel a little guilty.

She asked about something else. “You’re a rookie System, aren’t you?”

The System became pitiful again. “Yes. I was thrown into this department as soon as I was created.”

“It took me ages to find a host willing to complete missions.”

Jiang Nanxing thought to herself, No wonder. You’re so easy to fool.

The next day, Mother Jiang woke up, though she was still somewhat weak.

When she saw Jiang Nanxing, she smiled and tried to speak to her.

Jiang Nanxing stopped her.

In a gentle voice, Jiang Nanxing spoke to her mother at length.

She told her that her illness would soon be cured.

She told her about the plans they would make once she had recovered.

When Qin Jiu arrived, he saw a side of Jiang Nanxing he had never seen before: a tenderness that seemed to transform her completely.

Sunlight from outside the window cast a halo around her, making her look like an angel who had descended into the mortal world.

He did not disturb them. Leaning against the door, he quietly listened alongside Mother Jiang.

Jiang Nanxing’s gentle voice flowed slowly through the hospital room.

Mother Jiang soon grew tired; after all, she had only undergone surgery the night before.

Jiang Nanxing softened her voice, urged her mother to rest well, and tucked the blanket around her.

She turned, preparing to leave.

Then she found herself looking directly into Qin Jiu’s eyes.
