Chapter 46: You’re One of a Kind
In the emergency room of Kangcheng Hospital, the triage doctor inquired, “What’s wrong with the patient?”
Wang Guocheng, clutching his chest weakly and retching dryly several times, tried to speak, but his voice was so faint the doctor couldn’t catch it. The doctor turned to Fan Xiaoyao, “And you are?”
Fan Xiaoyao’s cheeks flushed crimson as she answered awkwardly, “I… I’m his girlfriend!”
Sitting in the wheelchair, Wang Guocheng rasped, “She’s my fiancée…”
The doctor glanced at him and chided, “If you don’t have the energy, don’t force yourself to talk. You’re a grown man, don’t be so dramatic!”
Tang Zhengyi, standing nearby, came to Wang Guocheng’s defense. “Doctor, my buddy here has had allergies since he was a kid. Back in college, I saw him nearly go into shock after eating animal organs!”
“What? Allergic shock from eating animal organs? That’s a one-in-five-hundred-million chance, and this young man managed to hit the jackpot. Well…” The doctor looked at Wang Guocheng as if he were a marvel.
Fan Xiaoyao shot Wang Guocheng a glare and complained, “You troublemaker, you know you’re allergic to animal organs, so why pretend you love eating them? Look where it’s landed us—spending the night in the hospital… Honestly, I’m impressed. The doctor says it’s a one-in-five-hundred-million chance, and yet here you are. You really are something else!”
As Fan Xiaoyao was chiding Wang Guocheng, the doctor was already handing her the hospital admission slip and a pile of lab orders.
“We’ll take the patient to the ward now. I’ll have a nurse come by to give him some anti-allergy medication. He’ll need to stay for observation tonight, and tomorrow, after we run some detailed tests, we’ll analyze his allergens.”
Just then, Tang Zhengyi’s phone rang. Seeing it was his wife calling, he hurriedly answered, “Honey, are you done with work? I… I’m at the hospital. I took Guocheng out for dinner, and… well, you won’t believe what happened…”
Before he could finish, his wife, Cao Xia, started scolding him, “Did you get him drunk again? You’re such a troublemaker, always up to no good…”

Cao Xia’s sharp voice carried through the room, and even Fan Xiaoyao, Wang Guocheng, and the doctor could hear her.
The doctor shot Tang Zhengyi a withering look. “The hospital is a quiet place. If you all want to squabble, do it outside—or at least go to the hospital garden. Shout all you want out there. Honestly, you’ve all watched too many melodramas…”
Fan Xiaoyao couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The doctor turned a stern gaze on her. “Young lady, did you find that funny? And you, how are you someone’s fiancée at such a young age? Look at this one in the wheelchair—he’s probably more than ten years older than you…”
If Wang Guocheng’s throat wasn’t so sore, he would have stood up and lectured the doctor. He touched his face and turned to Tang Zhengyi, who looked embarrassed. “Hey, Zhengyi, do I really look that old? I’m just barely thirty, right?”
The doctor was unimpressed. “Even just over thirty is much older than this young lady. How much older is he than you?” he asked Fan Xiaoyao.
Fan Xiaoyao’s petite stature and baby face often made people mistake her for a high schooler or even younger. She glanced at Wang Guocheng, mortified. “Doctor, he really is my fiancé. He’s only seven years older, it’s not that much. He doesn’t look as old as you say…” The last word nearly caught in her throat as she saw Wang Guocheng looking at her.
The doctor still eyed Wang Guocheng with some distaste. “Young man, you don’t look like you’re from Kangcheng, are you?”
Wang Guocheng had just about reached the end of his patience with this doctor and replied with a hint of mischief, “Doctor, am I to understand you have a crush on me? You’ve asked about my age, my fiancée’s age—someone might think you’re interested in me!”
The doctor rolled his eyes and snapped, “Madman, you’re impossible!”
With that, the doctor stormed out. The young nurse tried to smooth things over. “Don’t mind him. Dr. Sun is actually a kind person. A couple years ago, his daughter was lured away by an older man, so whenever he sees a May-December romance, he can’t help but think of his daughter and gets a bit… overzealous.”

Wang Guocheng already looked unwell, but when he set his jaw, he seemed even more intimidating—frankly, almost frightening.
The nurse realized she’d misspoken and hurried to explain, “Sir, please don’t misunderstand. I didn’t mean to imply anything about your relationship with this young lady…”
Fan Xiaoyao patted Wang Guocheng’s arm. “Okay, enough. Aren’t you the patient here? Didn’t you just have an allergic reaction? How come you’re so energetic all of a sudden? Maybe we should go have some spicy fish again…”
Wang Guocheng grimaced in pain. “Please… I admit I was wrong, alright?”
Once they got to the ward, the nurse set up the anti-allergy infusion for Wang Guocheng. Since the medication was a bit strong, Fan Xiaoyao adjusted the drip to make it flow more slowly.
Tang Zhengyi was just about to leave when Cao Xia arrived, carrying a bag of fruit. She handed it to Fan Xiaoyao. “You must be Zhengyi’s girlfriend. Miss, you have such poise—like a celebrity!”
Cao Xia took an instant liking to the fashionably dressed Fan Xiaoyao and introduced herself warmly. “I’m Cao Xia, Zhengyi’s wife. I work at JZ Corporation.”
Fan Xiaoyao glanced at the couple in surprise, a touch of envy in her voice. “So you’re both at JZ Corporation—husband and wife, colleagues as well. That’s wonderful!”
Then, with easy grace, she reached out to shake Cao Xia’s hand, introducing herself. “Hello, I’m Fan Xiaoyao from HK Corporation, and I’m also an online fiction writer—I mostly write romance novels.”
Cao Xia had been an avid reader since her student days, and when she heard Fan Xiaoyao was a web novelist, she gripped her hand in excitement. “What’s your pen name?”
Unused to such enthusiasm, Fan Xiaoyao replied shyly, “It’s nothing famous—my pen name is Fanyi. I’ve written a couple of novels, just enough to make a living.”
“You’re Fanyi?” Cao Xia’s eyes lit up as if she’d found a treasure. “I’ve read your books… I can’t believe I’m meeting you in person. What a delight!”
